How to Style Overalls

Overalls are still around ladies! They’re one of the most comfortable clothing items you can have in your closet! If you’re wondering how to style overalls, this post is for YOU! I used to worry that I was too old to pull off the overall look, but I do think it’s possible to wear them appropriately of you’re styling them appropriately! Sharing my favorite ways to wear overalls today.

How to Style Overalls

When it comes to styling overalls you need to make sure you have stylish overalls. Don’t laugh when I say this, I mean it. You’ll see the pair I have on below in these photos, there was a pair I bought before these that I thought I would love, but they were horrible. When you’re thinking about how to style overalls, the first rule of thumb is to make sure you have the best overalls (style wise) for YOU!

How to Style Overalls

When I was looking for overalls for myself, I looked for 3 things:

1. Overalls that were a bit deconstructed. I love rips here and there in the leg. I don’t want anything too inappropriate, but I do want clothes that work well for my personal style.

2. I wanted overalls with a darker wash. I’m not really a light jean girl, I’ve always liked darker washes. The second I saw these, I knew I had found my “perfect” pair.

3. I’m 5 feet tall, so I needed to make sure that I found a pair that would actually fit me! I don’t mind doing a tuck and roll at the bottom, but I didn’t want it to be too crazy for me. These were the perfect length.

I found these at American Eagle, which I do feel is a great place to shop for overalls. They also have some great fashion suggestions when looking for how to style overalls, too!

#1 – How to Style Overalls – Basic tee or tank

That’s about it! Don’t overthink fashion when you don’t need to. This is always my first piece of advice to my friends who are trying to work a trend. Overalls are the trend. They are the staple piece. What you wear underneath needs to work, but don’t go crazy worrying about it if it makes sense. I love to wear something completely basic understand and just go on out! A white tee or tank would work equally as well!

If you’re into color or bright and bold patterns, grab a tee or a tank like that, too! I love the ease of wearing tanks and tees because they’re so easy to toss on underneath. This black tank I basically wear ALL summer long, so I love how easy it is to pair up with these overalls, too! Perfect way to style. My advice? Toss on a basic necklace and some relaxed sneakers or booties with this look!

#2 – How to Style Overalls – Camo / Leopard

I’m a HUGE camo and leopard fan! Here’s the think with wearing anything with overalls, the more complicated the top – the more difficult it will be. You kind of want to stay away from button downs or thick shirts or anything with ties and or bows when you’re looking for tops to wear with overalls. You want to style them as seamlessly as possible. Patterns don’t always work well with overalls, but there are some that are perfection!

My advice? Grab a camo crewneck, a leopard crewneck or stripes and GO FOR IT! I love anything that shows off a little pattern or print, but you need to make sure it works.  I would never suggest wearing paisley prints because it’s too busy of a print. Find a classic print or pattern that works.  You could easily pull off polka dots, too. It’s just a touch of a pattern that goes a long way! For accessories on this one I love a good hat! Grab a baseball hat or fedora to top off the look!

#3 – How to Style Overalls – Wrap Scarf it UP!

If you know me, I’ll do just about ANYTHING to wear a wrap scarf or a cape. I love wearing a cape scarf because it’s just an easy, go to look. There’s nothing complicated or too difficult about it, but it’s a chic look. I still have on the same tank in this photo that I did earlier, the only change is the add on with the wrap scarf. I feel like it’s just trendy and elegant way to work overalls.

I’m obsessed with buffalo check plaid, so this was my go to look. You wear just about anything with a basic tee or tank underneath. Look for a pattern that you will wear different ways, not just with your overalls. I’m all about finding ways to diversify my wardrobe and this is an easy and simple way to do it! I added a cute little bootie to dress it up, too!
