Best Way to Organize Your Closet

Let me start from the beginning here, I love clothes. I mean… I LOVE clothes. I’m someone who can easily justify to myself why it’s necessary to have 5 red sweaters! Ever since I was a little girl I’ve loved clothes and fashion and style. I never had the budget growing up to spend a ton of money on clothes, so I was always resourceful and waited for sales or borrowed from friends. Now as an adult woman – I still don’t have the budget to go crazy, but my only indulgence in life is fashion! I still never pay full price, but I do have lots of clothes. It’s KEY for me to organize my closet.

Best Way to Organize Your Closet

I’m sharing today my top rules for the best way to organize your closet. My organizing days have changed throughout the years. When I graduated from college I lived in NYC and my apartment was the size of a shoebox! Literally it was 10 x 10 and I lived with my boyfriend (now husband!) at the time. We hardly had enough space for our bed, so I needed to get creative with our 1 and only closet. I added containers and made mock shelves for our clothes. It worked and was the best way to organize bedroom closet that was our only closet.

When we finally moved to our first house we had 4 bedrooms and only 2 kids at the time. I was able to spread out and I used the open bedrooms to store my clothing! When looking for the best way to organize your closet, this was it! I had my pants in one bedroom closet. I had my dresses in my bedroom closet. And in my own bedroom closet? I had my shirts, sweaters and sweats! It worked.

But then we had more babies! Since my husband knew how much I loved blogging about fashion he suggested we double the boys up in 2 of the bedrooms and turn our smallest bedroom into my personal closet. It was a dream come true and we worked with Easy Closets to create a masterpiece for me!

But then we moved 3 years ago and I was back to square ONE! I had to come up with some strategies again on the best way to organize your closet in a brand new space and this time I couldn’t share with my kids!

Ready for some closet organization tips and tricks?

1. When it comes down to finding the best way to organize your closet you need to stop and look at how much stuff you actually have. This can be tough for some people, but it’s so essential to constantly be purging and only keeping what you actually love and what you actually wear. Take a moment to go through all of your clothes and commit to getting rid of 1 item for every 5. I know it seems like a lot, but really use the mindset, “Do I need this?” “Do I wear this?” “Can I sell this and make money?” Start this closet organization with clothes you LOVE.

2. Make sure your closet is organized by type of clothes. What do I mean by this? It doesn’t matter if you’re trying to figure out how to organize your small closet or how to organize your walk-in closet, you want ALL of your clothes to be grouped together. All the pants, all the sweaters, all the blouses, all the dresses, all the skirts, etc. My advice? Take every single item out of your closet and then go through it all. This is hands down the best way to organize your closet.

3. Once you’ve grouped all of the clothes together by category – which this within itself will be like heaven for you because it’s so easy to find stuff – now I want you to organize by color. How do you organize your closet by color? Easy. Put all the black blouses together, all the white blouses together, all the printed blouses together. Put all the light colored dresses together, all the dark colored dresses together, etc. Grab all of your jeans and group them by wash… light to dark. This is the easiest way to make sure your closet is organized.

4. If you have the patience and you have the storage in your home, one of the best ways to organize your closet is seasonally, too. I used to be able to do this, but haven’t had the space for storage. Just recently over the holiday break we cleared out a section of our basement to give me storage to do this. In the winter months, ONLY have your winter clothes in your closet. In the summer months, ONLY have the summer clothes in your closet. Organizing seasonally is wonderful because you don’t have as many clothes to sort through on a daily basis.

I hope these tips and tricks helped. I’m a big believer in that you don’t need to be an organizing expert to be organized. With 5 kids I always feel like I’m a hamster on a wheel. It’s small things like this that help me feel organized in my life because (listen!) we all have to get dressed in the morning! One of the first places we stop in the morning is our closet, so don’t make it chaotic for yourself. Keep it clean and keep it organized.

I strongly suggest as an additional extra bonus tip for you when you’re trying to figure out the best way to organize your closet is to try and see about making some extra money. Many of our closets are treasure troves! You could sell items on eBay or Poshmark that you aren’t wearing any longer or bring them to a local consignment. Many times people don’t like parting with clothes because they were expensive for them, so try to make a little back. Otherwise anything you’re not wearing, DONATE!

Wow, I definitely need to check out their closet systems. We have a small master closet that is set up super awkwardly. I have to keep my clothes in a different closet because my husband has so many work clothes. Perhaps he should read this post too!
