Why Zoe Saldana is the Coolest Actress Ever #GotGVol2

Zoe Saldana.

I mean, she’s just the coolest ever.

When we headed to Atlanta for our secret set visit to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, I was hoping/hoping/hoping that Zoe would be on the list of people we would be interviewing. When I saw that she was, I was THRILLED!

Truthfully, I think Zoe was my favorite interview of all.

Why?

Because I wasn’t prepared for how real, raw and honest she would be with us. It was incredibly refreshing. She wasn’t Zoe the movie star… she was Zoe the mom, the wife, the woman… who is just like us, is trying to balance it all and make a wonderful life for her family.

You could instantly tell that she loves being on this set. You can tell that everyone is friends’ on set. You can tell that there aren’t any egos. You can tell that people genuinely like working together and that’s pretty awesome to see and feel as an “outsider” on the set.

As Zoe said, It’s like coming back to a family of people that you already broke the ice, you feel super safe being yourself and trying new things. You’re working with a director that is super supportive. “

When we mention Chris, she smiles. You can tell that there’s a wonderful relationship right there. “We’re parents and we’re parents of wonderful little kid boys, too. We’re constantly bouncing back ideas and, and he shares with me how he handles being part of a family that’s like a traveling troop… and sometimes we just talk about what’s a good bottle of wine that we’d like to have, so we never run out of things to talk about.”

As a room full of female bloggers – and many of us as moms of daughters ourselves – it was really the next question (for me) that made me listen and soak up every single one of Zoe’s words. The question started off as an innocent one, “What is your favorite type of movie?”

“I like sci-fi and I like spaces that are under-served. And I think that for females, I think we need more examples, much more diverse examples of professions and callings and not just everything so internal and dramatic. I think that women, we need to be a little more physical. It’s better for our health. It helps our sanity, too… I know I was a little girl starving to have more female heroes, you know? And I held on to the very few that were out there and then I just had to become one because that’s what we do for our little girls, you know?”

I mean, that – to me – said it all. I actually remember jotting down on a piece of paper during that interview the words “that’s what we do for our little girls.” It left an impression on me and I loved hearing Zoe talk about how conscious she was of that when she chose roles. It was awesome as a woman and as a fan of her to hear that truth.

But then… we got deeper with Zoe, which was even more amazing. We asked her, “As a working mom, do you have any tips or tricks for finding balance with work and travel and everything?” And it was so wonderful hearing about a recent conversation that she had had with her husband on this very topic.

“Just last night, Mike (Zoe’s husband) goes, I understand we’re super busy, let’s practice still connecting, conversations. I don’t care what we’re talking about. If you’re in the bathroom while I’m in the shower, let’s just share five things. It could be five anything. And I love, I love that. You just have to constantly keep it open. So, that’s I guess one tip that I would love to share.”

As you can tell, this interview was all Zoe. She was so cool and so fabulous and so open. The vibe in the room was wonderful because we all loosened up with her and really felt comfortable to ask her questions that we were pondering. One question was about her fitness routine because she is INCREDIBLY fit! And as a room full of fellow moms, we needed/wanted to know her secret after having her twin boys.

It requires determination and a lot of discipline. I did not want to hate myself and I did not want to start fantasizing of what I used to be. I wanted to work with what I have. I gained 65 pounds. I’m not comparing myself to everybody, but if my experience can be inspirational for you guys, I’m a killer. I don’t just approach it like ‘oh, I’m going to do, I’m going to start, I’m going to start like Sunday. I’m going to start Monday because Sunday, you know, we’re having the barbeque.’ I’m like no f’ing way. [LAUGHTER] No f’ing way ’cause to me it’s scarier to look at myself while I’m brushing my teeth and have 10 things to say about myself that I hate. I don’t want to live like that. We’re gifts. We’re unique. We’re special. We’ve got to work. We work for everybody else every single day. You work for yourself. Be self-focused. I don’t compromise.”

I mean. Talk about being mad real. How cool is Zoe Saldana?

I could go on and on and on about how amazing, incredible and awesome it was to be in the same room with Zoe. It felt like we were talking with a girlfriend. She was truly mesmerizing for me. She opened my eyes.

She is – the kind of woman – I want my little girl to look up to.

Thank you, Zoe, for this powerful interview.
