Every night before bed we read to Victoria. She loves getting read to from us (mom and dad) or her brothers. Since we strongly believe that reading before bed is a wonderful night time ritual, we’re always looking for fun books to add into our “library.” It’s a great way to bond and really relax and unwind before bedtime.

We recently received a fun “Mo Mail” package for the kids that they were thrilled about… !

Like I mentioned about, ELEPHANT & PIGGIE LIKE READING is a new beginning-reader series created by Mo Willems. It’s so exciting to have an author inspire and ignite a love of reading in kids! It’s wonderful to see his passion for getting kids excited about the love of reading.

So what is Elephant and Piggie up to??

Best friends Elephant and Piggie introduce kids to their favorite books – brought to life in original stories created by contemporary children’s book authors and illustrators. Each 64-page beginning reader delivers a high quality reading experience that speaks to kids’ interests and abilities through stories that are fun and funny. The defining dialogue-driven format, established in the Elephant & Piggie series, unifies the collection with an active, participatory storytelling style that fans love. Plus, each book contains all-new Elephant & Piggie story bumpers!

We got in our “Mo Mail” the first two books in the #EPLR series that will hit shelves September 20th (!!!) – We are Growing and Cookie Fiasco. They are INCREDIBLE! Absolutely INCREDIBLE!

1st one we read!?

WE ARE GROWING by award-winning author and illustrator Laurie Keller! Growing up isn’t always the EASIEST.
Walt and his friends are growing up fast! Everyone is the something-est. But . . . what about Walt? He is not the tallest, or the curliest, or the silliest. He is not the anything-est! As a BIG surprise inches closer, Walt discovers something special of his own!

Next up?

COOKIE FIASCO by Caldecott Award winner Dan Santat – Four Friends. Three Cookies. One Problem.
Hippo, Croc, and the Squirrels are determined to have equal cookies for all! But how? There are only three cookies . . . And four of them. . . What’s more, they need to act fast before nervous Hippo breaks all the cookies into crumbs!

As I mentioned above, these books are incredible! These are definite must-haves for your library at home! There’s nothing like seeing your child light up with a really wonderful book. My favorite words, “Can we read that again?” I know it was magical when I hear those words from my kids!

I’m always asked by parents – How do you get in the nighttime reading routine?

I have 4 tips I love to share, especially with school being back in session.

  1. Technology for the Kids (TV/Games/iPads) are gone 1 hour before bed. Nothing can be on for them. I need them to get into the mode of quiet reading time.
  2. Always build in reading time into your nighttime routine. If you put the kids to bed at 8:30PM, start at 7:30PM to get ready for bed (jammies on, brushing teeth, etc.)
  3. Always leave a small stack of books next to your child’s bed. This always is a motivator to get my kids in bed and moving along at night!
  4. Just get into the routine of reading. Even on nights you’re exhausted and just want to crash on the couch and read a book on your own, just make sure you ALWAYS read. It’s the consistency that will help you get going. Before long it will be second nature, I promise!

I will be reading them to my boys! Even my 10-year old loves participating because we do dramatic readings! ? I love mo willems books because they draw my kids into the emotions and storylines. And my 6-year-old struggles with reading and gets easily frustrated, but he does great with the elephant & piggie books!
