Carpe Diem

Carpe Diem…

Many, many years ago while at Martha’s Vineyard, I happened into a little shop on a little street and found this gem of a message engraved into a smooth rock –

The rock is just a rock but for the message.

We might pass this rock by, not give it another glance, pick it up and toss it out of our way if it’s blocking something in our path.

We may push it aside as one of a million rocks just like it.

We may think it ordinary.

It’s the message that makes it special – Carpe Diem –

Latin: Seize the day. Enjoy the present, as opposed to placing all hope in the future.

I brought this rock home and placed it on my kitchen window. It’s seen a couple more kitchen windows since, but it’s the first thing I see each morning when I glance outside, make my coffee, check my outdoor thermometer.

We see a lot of rocks in our travels through Life.

We see a lot of days in our travels through Life.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we stopped, took in each moment, each day, gave it another glance and thought it and all of its moments extraordinary?

If we really, really seized each one as a gem, like the ordinary rock with the gem of a message.

THIS, we can teach our children and our grandchildren!
