What are your Child’s Dream Traits?

My oldest son William leads the pack of 4 siblings right behind him. It’s funny, from the very second William was born, before I even knew I would go on to have 4 more children, I always thought William had an “old soul.” William has a true seriousness about him… a drive… a go-getter attitude in life that has just truly always been within him. He’s the kind of kid, I know this is crazy to say because he’s only 11 years old… but he’s like a little man and I love that about him. He’s a great student. He’s a great athlete. He literally puts 120% into every single thing that he does and as his mother, I can say that that makes me so proud of him.

I thought it would be fun to take a quiz with William that SheKnows sent me called, The “Dreamer Traits in Children” by Ashley Soderlund Ph.D. It intrigued me immediately because it asked me to answer 10 multiple choice questions about my child and was supposed to help me determine what kind of dreamer traits my child has.

As soon as I read the 1st question, I was excited to do this for my William:

“When your child talks about an idea they have it is: a) big picture idea, wonderfully abstract b) full of amazing amounts of details c) a novel idea, visionary d) usually focused on helping people in need

Immediately I answered option b. It made me smile because just the other night William was telling me about an idea he had for the government, it was filled with details and exact information. I sat there listening with my eyes darting back and forth to my husband, hoping he saw the “oh-my-goodness” in my eyes. William truly thinks everything through and doesn’t leave out a detail! Ever. As I went on to answer the next 9 questions, each answer to each question was very easy for me to answer with my William in mind. It was almost easy to take! I didn’t need to think or even stumble on any question.

After I finished the quiz, I asked William to take it for himself. I went into the other room so I wouldn’t impact any of his answers, I genuinely wanted to see if our answers were similar… if he saw himself as I see him.

What is your child’s favorite school subject?

  1. Art and/or music
  2. History and/or English
  3. Math and/or computer science
  4. Science and/or psychology

And honestly, I thought that when I saw that question, too, but I know he loves history and loves reading!

So what did the answers reveal about my William? Since most of the answers were b’s (all but 1!), he fell under the category of PROFESSIONAL.

Your child’s dreamer traits are CONSCIENTIOUSNESS, ORGANIZATION, and RESPONSILBILITY. They are detail oriented, observant and careful. Children who have these traits are also usually very well regulated, get along well with others, and have a good sense of responsibility. Thus, they work well in groups and may often be leaders. They care about the state of the world and want to work hard to make it a better place. Your child may enjoy a career in business, law, engineering or science.

This truly is him to a T. It made me smile to see that he saw himself the same way I see him. As his mother, there’s a special bond there and I loved that this simple and fast quiz honed in on the special qualities that I see in William and he sees in himself. As the oldest of 5 children, William has always felt the extra responsibility of that, too – and I know that will shape him in life, too.

The quiz is wonderful because then it goes on to give you some tips about some activities that you can do with your child, too. William’s been on me to do a lemonade stand, so I guess I have to make sure he does it now!!

To cultivate your young professional and set them up for success, help them start and execute a project. It may be cleaning up a local park and organizing the neighborhood children to help, building and setting up a lemonade stand on the day your neighborhood has a garage sale, or helping with a holiday toy drive. These kinds of activities help to nurture your child’s sense of leadership and responsibility, skills they will use their whole lives.

Thank you to SheKnows for this wonderful opportunity to take this quiz. I actually took it for 3 of my other children and it was spot on, too! Have some fun and check it out for yourself, too!
