Raising a Rock-Star Reader Book Review

My dream as a mother is to have my 5 children had a deep love and passion for reading. I loved to read when I was a kid and I would literally get lost in books for hours and hours and hours. Nancy Drew was my “best friend”. The Babysitter Club girls were my “best friends.” Sweet Valley High was a place I wanted to visit. Encyclopedia Brown was someone I admired. All of these characters and these stories… they were part of my childhood.

I want them exact same for my children.

Fostering a love and passion for reading in your children needs to start from an early age. The beauty is that we – as the parents – play a HUGE role in developing that love of reading. We open it up. We bring it out. We unlock the keys for them.

My dear friend and rock-star blogger Amy Mascott founder of Teach Mama, along with the uber-talented Allison McDonald founder of No Time For Flash Cards have written an INCREDIBLE book for every parent, grandparent and caregiver – Raising A Rock-Star Reading.

Raising a Rock-Star Reader

This book is like being handed the magical keys to unlocking future readers… and having them love it, too. Reading is such an important thing to not only encourage, but do with your children at a young age. I know we all are busy and have crazy schedules, but taking that time in the morning, afternoon or evening to read a book, it’s a priceless gift.

As Amy and Allison note right on page 5, “You are your child’s first – and most important! – teacher.” How very true.

Raising a Rock-Star Reader is a wonderful read because Amy and Allison truly make their book so engaging. You can feel their passion throughout the book.

So what can you expect to find?

75 easy-to-implement tips to help your child develop a lifelong love of reading!

From Tip #1 – CREATE A LIBRARY FROM DAY ONE… to TIP #33 – PLAY RHYMING GO FISH… to TIP #75 CHOOSE THE BEST APPS AND WEBSITES. You’re getting it all! You’re going to get throughout the book quick tips for building literacy. What I love is that each tip is doable and truly impactful.

One tip in particular that I loved from the book was TIP #43 – USE MEALTIME FOR LETTER HUNTING. This is something I absolutely love. Amy and Allison share the advice as to keep those cereal boxes out and allow your children to identify letters and words. I see my 7 year old truly loving this and really getting excited when he can make a word out effortlessly. Not to mention, another tip they give is to invest in placemats (or make your own) that have letters, numbers and words on them. GREAT way to learn during mealtime and it’s great fun to have with the family, too.

Tons of fun, quick activities for building children’s oral language and early reading and writing skills.

From creating rhyming treasure boxes, to letting kids play with their food, to playing grid games… they share so many fun and awesome activities to help build literacy skills. They just give you so many different options and things that you can do with your kids. It’s incredible.

Free printables that you can use with your child any day of the week!

And I have to add, from a complete personal side of things… I have known Amy through the blogging community for years. Amy is one of the kindest, nicest and most compassionate people ever. Amy’s love and passion for education and learning is something that I have always admired and loved about her. To see this book come together and to see her sharing her gift and her talent in the pages of this book with Allison… it’s remarkable. I’m beyond proud to call her a friend and to share the love of this book with you all.
