I’ll never forget standing in my NYC apartment bathroom on Saturday morning, January 17th, 2004. I so wanted there to be 2 lines on the pregnancy test. I was hoping and praying and wishing like crazy. When I walked into the bathroom, there were no lines at all! My husband was right next to me and said, “I think it’s upside down!”

And it was.

And there were 2 beautiful, dark pink lines.

The smile across my face at that very moment in time and the scream I screamed, it will live in my mind forever. I didn’t realize that day that that moment, that specific moment would be the first of thousands of mom firsts for me and my husband. That was my first positive pregnancy test after months of hoping to see 2 lines.  That first moment. I will never forget it.

I’ve been blessed in life to have 5 children. I always wanted a big family, even when people thought we were crazy for going for a 3rd and then a 4th… a big family was what me and Matt always wanted. We never wanted anything other than a full house. Fast forward 10 years later after my first first with my William… and here we are, with 5 kids… a full house and never felt more fulfilled in our entire lives.

The magic of a baby’s first – regardless of what it is – has never been lost on me.

It begins differently for every person, but for us… it began with a first positive test, then a first sonogram, then a first listening of the heartbeat, then a first kick, then a first contraction, then a first meeting.

Ahh… that first meeting, it is the most magical moment of a mother’s life.

It’s that exact moment when you lock eyes with a child and all the worries of the world disappear in that very magical moment. The only way I’ve ever been able to describe it is just a feeling that “all is well with the world.”

That first moment of meeting, that will always and forever be in my mind.

And then there’s the beauty of all the firsts that follow – first feeding, first diaper change, first all-nighter, first, bath, first smile, first tooth, first step, first word… there’s so many steps wrapped in the perfect world of baby pinks and blues.

First college acceptance.
First heartbreak.
First true love.
First job.

As parents, we never stop with the firsts with each of our children.

We embrace each moment.

But it’s looking back to those first hours and days and months of life that still truly bring tears of joy and happiness to my eyes.

My journey of 5 firsts.

Each one is a milestone.

Always and forever.
