24 Hours of NO Technology: #AlamoDriveHappy Travel Resolution

Ever since I was a little girl, I have loved I making New Year Resolutions. I just have always loved the idea of having a goal or a challenge to try and accomplish throughout the year. As you can imagine, throughout the years of my life, my resolutions have changed quite a bit as I’ve gotten older.

family time with the kids

Some of them have been…

When I was a girl, my resolution was to get straight A’s in school.
When I was a teenager, my resolution was to write letters to a pen pal in Spain.
When I was in my early 20’s, my resolution was to commit to calling and staying in constant touch each week with my Nana and Grandma.
When I got married and had my first 2 babies, my resolution was to take care of my body, eat healthier and join a gym.

As you can tell, my resolutions have been impacted by different areas in my life at different times – school, friends, family and health.

Fast forward to present day — as a 36 year old married, mom of 5, I can tell you first-hand that my resolutions now center around my family.

My family is my core, my life, my inspiration for everything that I do in my life. Having children that are 1, 6, 7, 9 and 10 years old… I want my resolutions to have impact my family. We’re a tech-savvy, always-on-the-go family with work, school, swim meets, basketball and mommmy-and-me classes. I feel like we don’t have “down time” very often and when we do, we’re connected to some sort of technology device. The boys are usually playing video games, me and my husband are watching TV with the baby, where we both have a laptop on our lap, too! Our lives are very much about being connected… even when we’re on the go.

The only time we’re really together, I mean really together, without the busy-ness of our lives is when we’re on vacation, my favorite time.

I’m honored and excited to have partnered with Alamo this year as one of their Chief Travel Moms because I think it’s an incredible opportunity to inspire family travel.

It’s something that we try to do multiple times throughout the year because we see the positive impact it has on our family. We’re together. We’re bonding. We’re creating memories. The goal of the Alamo partnership is to (again, what I love) inspire family travel, provide easy and simple solutions to family travel issues, show how family travel can increase family bonding and celebrate the laughable moments of motherhood and family travel. Believe me, we should have a camera crew following us, there’s NEVER A DULL MOMENT.

Alamo has challenged me to come up with a New Year’s resolution/goal for family travel.

I love this.

I’ve thought long and hard about this because it’s a challenge I want to accomplish and one that I want to get my family on-board with, too.

It’s funny, I came up with my personal challenge while I was sitting in my kitchen, asking my family what would be some cool challenges to try out for us. As I was asking everyone, my son William was on Instagram, my son Alex and Ben were playing Madden NFL football on their iPads, my son Henry was watching a movie on his iPad and my husband was checking his email. I couldn’t get anyone’s attention. It was in that moment that I thought of it → 24 HOURS WITH NO TECHNOLOGY.

It just made sense.

In our everyday lives, we’re all about being connected. As a digital mom who does this as a full time job, I get it. Technology has changed our lives. It’s made everything for convenient and easy. We’re able to connect with millions of people, play games, check schedules, work, watch movies, etc. We’re able to do so much and my sons (and my daughter eventually) don’t really know a life without technology at their fingertips.

But when I was a kid, there was no of this. There were no cell phones. There were no tablets. There was no internet.

We made fun and kept ourselves busy as a family – playing games, talking, laughing, singing. We did family activities – skiing, swimming, hiking, tubing, etc.

I’m challenging my family (and myself!) to do NOTHING for 24 hours with technology.

No iPads.
No TV.
No iPhones.
No laptops.
No movies.

Nothing.

It’s just going to be us, our family… finding fun activities to do together.

This won’t be easy for my kids, believe me!

But they’re going to take the challenge/resolution with me.

I’m challenging YOU to do this with me. Can you family make it 24 hours without technology? Can you do it? Can you find things to do?
