How to Keep your Home Safe during National Home Safety Month

June is National Home Safety Month. With 5 children, I make it my mission to make sure our home is as safe as can be throughout the year, but I love that in month of June, I have a friendly reminder.   There’s nothing more important than making sure your home is a safe one for you and your family. Life can get so busy with activities and schedules and appointments and summer craziness, but safety in the home is something that needs to be taken seriously and remembered. It’s something that my husband and I talk about often, and really feel passionate about spreading the word.

I’m happy to share that I have teamed up with the American Cleaning Institute on an important safety campaign called the KEY Pledge. The ACI is urging parents and caregivers to take the KEY Pledge and re-evaluate their homes, particularly the laundry room. My 5 children are under 9 years old, so I know first hand how important it is to make sure there is safety in your laundry room.

So what is the KEY Pledge?

It’s impactful and simple:

    • K – Keep single-load liquid laundry packets out of the reach and sight of children at all times
    • E – Educate your family and friends about the safe use and storage of these new laundry products. Safety takes us all!
    • Y – You serve a key role in laundry safety

I use single-load liquid laundry packets in my home. I store them up high in a cabinet behind my washer so that my children cannot see or reach for them. They are out of sight, so therefore, out of mind.

It’s important to take stock during this time and see what products you have in your home and in your laundry room that could be very harmful if they fall into little hands. Kids are quick as lightening. They want to see and touch and feel everything! With my daughter right now, she’s just about a year old, I need to make sure all small toys and trinkets are off the floor because they go right to her mouth. It terrifies me! In just a split second, a child could reach for something that they’re not supposed to and as a parent/caregiver, we want to take that worry off our minds. We can do this by storing products up high and out of the way. It’s also very important to make sure you share this information with other family members and your friends. My parents watch my children a lot at their home, so I have made sure all of their single-load liquid laundry packets are out of reach, too.

I love what the American Cleaning Institute has created because it’s such a powerful and important national education campaign.   It’s something all families should be pledging. You can take the pledge online at keypledge.com and follow ACI’s simple steps to be the KEY to your family’s laundry safety. Also, just by taking the Pledge you will be automatically entered into a sweepstake to win a $2,500 gift card to help makeover your laundry room!

Not bad, huh?
