The Power of 16.57 Seconds

Yesterday was my Alexander’s day.

He’s just beginning to love swimming. He’s liked it all season because it’s something fun for him to do. He doesn’t really worry about times. He doesn’t really worry about place. He just likes to have some fun with his buddies, and I LOVE that about him.

He has qualified this season for 4 events for the YMCA New England Swim Championships (next weekend) and we couldn’t be prouder. It’s funny having 2 boys that are so different in personality. Our William concentrates on times like it’s a science. Our Alexander isn’t like that, not yet. But there is ONE race that he was hoping to make it to this year at New England’s – the 25 yard freestyle. He loves this event. All year my husband and I have seen him get closer and closer to qualifying, but he just kept missing it.

This weekend was the Last Gasp Swim Meet in Wareham, MA. Essentially it’s a swimmer’s last chance to qualify for championships before the end of the season. We signed Alex up for the 25 freestyle. To say I was nervous is an understatement. I really wanted him to make the cut because I knew he wanted to be able to swim it with the other boys on his team. My husband and I kept saying to him, “only breath 2 times and just put your head down and GUN IT!”

Well, he did. He needed to get a 17.10 and he got a 16.57.

I’ll tell you what, I almost started crying on deck for the little guy.
