National Crayon Day

Today is National Crayon Day.

I’m not kidding… I have thousands of crayons in my house.

Thousands.

It’s funny, regardless of how many we have and how many are all over the house, they always make me smile… even if the boys have left them out on the floor for me to pick up!

A crayon embodies so much. It’s passion. It’s creativity. It’s imagination. It’s freedom. It’s life. It’s fashion. It’s realness. It’s art.

Crayola has always been my go-to crayon brand. I used them when I was a child, and I love seeing my own children use them, too.

For over a century, kids (young and old) have been coloring their way through childhood with the iconic Crayola crayon. Crayola shared some really cool history with me about their brand that I’m excited to share with you!

Box of Crayons

Did you know…

The first box of Crayola crayons was introduced in 1903. It sold for a nickel and included the same eight colors available today: red, blue, yellow, green, violet, orange, black and brown.

Crayola produces nearly 3 billion crayons each year, an average of 12 million wax sticks daily. That’s enough to circle the globe 6 times!

The average child in the United States will wear down about 730 crayons by his or her 10th birthday (11,464 boxes or 7 lbs of crayons) enough to cover an NBA basketball court!

According to Christian Science Monitor, parents buy enough crayons in a year to make a giant crayon 35 feet wide and 100 feet taller than the Statue of Liberty!
