Niche Blog – How to Find It #YouWannaBeABlogger

Looking to start a niche blog? It’s a great move to make because it’s a great way to zone in on one topic. It’s not always easy to decide what your niche will be, so make sure you take the time to figure out what you want it to be. Creating a niche blog is a wonderful way to really get good followers who stick with you!

Niche Blog

Niche Blog

When I first started blogging back in 2006, I didn’t have a niche. I kind of thought “mom” was my niche, which it was… but here was the thing, there were also thousands and thousands of other moms with the same niche blog.

(Insert head bang.)

I first noticed that I really needed a deeper niche at a BlogHer Boston Event. I was sitting around the table with all these interesting and fascinating women when I realized that everyone had something that they were passionate about… food, photography, eco-living, crafting, fitness, home decor, product reviewing. Mine was fashion and beauty. It was what made us all the same, but all different at the same time. It was then that I had my “light bulb” moment so to speak that I really needed to forge ahead with the fashion aspect to my blog. I had been blogging here and there about fashion since I started my blog, but had never dove in head first. I decided on December 31st, 2009 to start the series, “365 Days of Fashion Advice for Moms.” I had worked for Donna Karan in NYC and knew tons of tips and advice about fashion, so why not share it all, right? Not to mention… I just had a HUGE passion for fashion for moms in particular.

That was when my blog really became MY blog. For the first time, I loved what I was sharing. For the first time, I felt like what I said might actually help other moms.

I had found my niche.

Niche Blog – What is Yours?

It’s been a little over 5 years now since I started my niche blog about fashion for moms. I’ve definitely evolved and definitely changed over the last 5 years, which is natural for blogging, I promise! I’ve add fashion for kids and babies to my site now. I’ve also expanded into beauty for moms, another HUGE passion for myself. I’ve also evolved into creating and opening myself up more on my blog. I started doing that about 2 years ago with the addition my daily blogging, I feel like it’s a better way for people to get to know me through my personal life, my sons, my daughter, my husband and our life together. When I referenced at the beginning the “mom” is a niche, it’s just a large one… I was serious. Being a mom is a niche online for a blogger, it’s something that makes you different from all the other “other” bloggers. I just have felt that by digging deeper beyond just mom, by giving yourself another niche… it’s an additional way to separate yourself from the pack.

So here’s the million dollar question, “How do you find your blogging niche?” Or as someone asked me last week, “How do you know you’ve picked the right niche?”

My response to the 2nd question was easy, “Believe me… you’ll know.”

Niche Blog Questions

I feel like finding your niche is probably one of the most fun parts of being blogger. You find your niche by just knowing or by asking yourself these types of questions:

What do I love?
What am I passionate about?
What could I write about every single day and not get tired of it?
What types of blogs do I gravitate to right now?
What kind of blog would my best friend think I would write?
What type of blog do I want to be known for?

Start seeing what kinds of topics arise with these questions. And don’t be surprised if over a period of time you see that you have a few additional passions. I’ve just gotten myself back into the fitness routine and I have just LOVED it! I found that there were thousands of other moms like me who just had babies who were all trying to “get their body back.” We aren’t looking to be supermodels, we’re just looking to be healthy and fit for ourselves and our families.

Finding your blogging niche is a powerful thing and it can help keeping you on track and motivated and driven.
