Gro Something Greater with Scotts Miracle-Gro

Gardening has become a passion for my family.

Two years ago my husband told me he wanted to create a garden with our sons. I thought it was a phenomenal idea because I was excited to have them grow some tomatoes and cucumbers – 2 veggies I eat the most throughout the summer.

Little did I know that my idea of their “garden” would take up half of our yard! Oh, yes… my husband created a 30 x 50 foot garden with my sons in the summer of 2012. I’ll never forget walking outside and seeing ½ of my yard sectioned off with tape. Before my husband started to dig and create, he wanted to make sure I knew exactly what his vision was. I have to admit, at first I was skeptical. I wasn’t sure if he and the boys would be able to maintain a garden to that size, but they were so excited to get down and dirty together, that all I could do was smile and say, “Go for it!”

The garden was important for my husband in the summer of 2012 because he has just gone through a very traumatic experience. In January of that year, he had a cancerous tumor removed from his abdomen. It changed everything for him. He started to eat cleaner. He eliminated as much stress from his life that he could. And he vowed to take up hobbies of things that he loved. Creating a garden… it hit all 3 of those things for him – fresh foods, quiet time outside and creating something beautiful. The garden was my husband’s zen, his sacred space.

He started to grow something great… not just fruits and veggies, but beauty and love and passion with our sons. It was incredible to see. He has brought this love and inspiration to our sons’ school and has helped create beautiful gardens there.

Over the last 2 years my husband has grown hundreds and hundreds of fruits and veggies. We have tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, peppers, beans, beats, lettuce, carrots, strawberries, blueberries, pumpkins, eggplant, watermelon, squash, etc. We eat everything that comes from our garden, it’s a very cool and prideful thing for my sons to see and be part of. I have watched the evolution of our garden grow and I have been mesmerized by the connection that this garden has with our family. We get so many “crops” (as my husband calls it) that we have started to bring baskets of veggies and fruits to our neighbors and family and friends. We’ve also donated food, too – which is something that we have vowed to do throughout this season, too.

Scotts Miracle-Gro is inspiring people to Gro Something Greater. I love this because I have lived and watched the man I love more than anything in this world grow something greater over the last 2 years. I have watched how much this has changed his life for the good and what it has helped him bring to our sons, our family, our neighborhood, our community.

More than food has grown from our garden… and it’s something I love, cherish and will continue to help my husband do.
