You Can’t Support Your Family Through Blogging (Watch me!) #GirlsCan #COVERGIRL

I’ll never forget the day my husband walked into our kitchen and said, “I’m being laid off.”

Truthfully, we both knew the day was coming, we just didn’t want it to actually come.

Henry was 1 year old, Ben was 2, Alex and was 3 and William was 4 at the time. The thought of having another baby literally went out the window because without Matt’s salary, I wasn’t sure how we were going to manage 4!

I was scared.

But I also remember a feeling come over me. A powerful feeling. A feeling that basically screamed, “You can do it.”

I had been blogging for about 15 months at that time. The most I was making was $1000 a monthly, hardly enough money to support a family of 6! But there was something in my bones. There was something in my heart. There was something there that said to be you CAN do it.

I won’t name names… but there were people in my life friends and family that were worried and thought I was CRAZY when I said, “I’ll make the money up online through blogging.”

I’ll never forget someone saying to me, “Oh… you can’t do that, how will you do it?”

I smiled and said, “I’ll find a way.”

I didn’t know what I’d do. I didn’t know how I’d do it. But I was obsessed with this blogging community and working with brands and figuring out ways to make things happen… so I knew I just had to, I could DO IT. I used my business sense and my passion for my blog and I went for it. I dive in. Head down. And worked my butt off.

Within a year, I made up my husband’s salary.

Girls CAN do it. We have the power within us to do anything. You need to believe. You need to work hard. You need to push the barriers and boundaries. You need to smile at a NO and go find the YES.

#GirlsCan

This is what COVERGIRL’s latest campaign is all about and I couldn’t be prouder to share this with my audience.

COVERGIRL has always believed that women CAN change the world and they have a tradition of empowering women to break though and rock their beautiful, in the choices they’ve made selecting authentic, inspiring COVERGIRLS, and our work with partners and programs to kick the “can’ts” to the curb. COVERGIRL wants to harness the power and possibility of girls everywhere for boundary-breaking change.

In continuing its Girls Can movement, a mission to help girls overcome barriers to break boundaries, COVERGIRL announces a groundbreaking partnership with renowned journalist and documentarian Soledad O’Brien as well as her Production Company, Starfish Media Group and the Soledad O’Brien and Brad Raymond Starfish Foundation, which shares the same commitment to the advocacy for empowerment of young women.

Starfish Media Group and O’Brien will create and produce a content series of true, untold stories, exploring some of the biggest challenges that young women face in achieving their dreams when it comes to pursuing higher education, going into their chosen field of work or building a business.

This content series will follow the lives of several young women and include lessons learned by some of the women who have succeeded through O’Brien’s foundation. The Foundation’s mission is to provide hard-working young women with the resources necessary to succeed, and provides educational scholarships and individualized mentoring for 25 young women every year. The series will focus on how the young women create change in their lives as well as provide a guide for what people everywhere can do to get involved and empower women to turn “can’t” into “can”. This content series will be rolling out in the coming months.

COVERGIRL is looking for all women to get involved and join the conversation about turning “cant’s” into “cans” especially for young women who want to break-through in non-traditional fields or those in which women are underserved. During the Olympics Closing Ceremony, the COVERGIRL brand debuted a motivational video starring COVERGIRLs Queen Latifah, Ellen, P!nk, Sofia Vergara, Becky G, Katy Perry and Janelle Monae, to kick off the #GirlsCan movement and start a conversation about what girls CAN do when they refuse to let life’s “can’ts” hold them back. Part of this movement is a dialogue with young women where COVERGIRL seeks to discover the barriers and boundaries that girls across the country have overcome in order to help tailor Girls Can programming to the wants and needs of women.

It’s simply phenomenal and I love it.
