Torin Yater-Wallace Interview: American Freestyle Skiier

OK. My sons are OBSESSED with Torin Yater-Wallace.

Torin Yater-Wallace

Literally, obsessed.

Torin Yater-Wallace is a freestyle skier from the United States. He won a silver medal at Winter X Games XV in the SuperPipe, making him the youngest medalist in Winter X-Games history. At just 15 years of age, Yater-Wallace was the third-youngest male competitor in Winter X Games history.

Torin is a powerhouse… putting it lightly!

I had the amazing opportunity to interview Torin with my SONS!! They each came up with 2 questions and the had a blast waiting to see how he would answer! I am honored he took the time to be so honest and make 2 boys SO HAPPY!!!!

Thanks Torin!!

How does it feel to be 17 years old and to be competing at the Games? It feels pretty crazy to be competed at the games, it’s a pretty surreal experience and a lot of responsibility to take at a young age, but in the end it’s all worth it. if I would have been on my couch 5 years ago thinking about my career, I would have never thought I’d be here making the Olympic team at 18. It’s going to be a wild experience in itself, but especially for someone who is young.

Do you ever get scared when you’re competing?
Yes, it’s hard not to get scared- there’s a lot of pressure and nerves, you do everything you can try and block that out of your mind. That’s the main achievement in my mind in this sport, when you can overcome that fear- but it’s hard when all the pressure is on and it’s your last run and your only chance of winning is winning this last run and getting the higher score than the other person.

How do you train throughout the year? Do you like training?
I love to train throughout the year, go up on the mountain with my friends. In my mind I don’t call it training at all I just think of it as skiing with my friends- it’s not like a job to me and something I have to do. Even in the summer, I try to find places in different regions where there’s snow- new Zealand, the southern hemisphere, etc.

What are you most excited about for the Games?
Everything, it’s going to be a super crazy experience and I hope everything goes well and it’s going to be an awesome experience.

How does it feel to be partnered with P&G’s Thank you, Mom?
I got involved with the P&G Thank You, Mom campaign when Crest approached me, and I thought the campaign they did with Thank You, Mom in London was really cool. Many of my fellow Olympic athletes have been involved with this campaign as well and created “Raising An Olympian” films that are really inspirational and moving. My mom has always helped me throughout my life, and has been so dedicated to my skiing because she knew how much I loved it! She has always been there for me by helping me get my first sponsors, filming me and I definitely wouldn’t be at the point I am in my career and at the level I am and be a professional without my mom! I thought this campaign would be a really cool opportunity to be able to show the world how much my mom does for me. She was always pushing me to succeed and keep going even after I failed and telling me “alright, let’s go do this” and pushing me to do exactly what I wanted to do. There have been times where I’ve been down on myself and bummed about results, and she’s always been there to help me out.
