There are lots of toys that make the “hot toys lists” each year, but I’ve found a lot of them really aren’t so hot when you get them home. Plus, it’s definitely not worth paying double or triple from a scalper to get one! I hate spending money on stuff I know my kids will get bored of fast, so here are three terrific tech gifts for kids that stand the test of time. And they’re all still in stock at your local Target.
SKYLANDERS SWAP FORCE
The next in the series of this super successful franchise, Swap Force gives kids even more play—you can actually swap the tops and bottoms of the Skylanders figures to unlock exponentially more powers. And as a mom, I really like that kids can use their imagination and play with the characters even after screen time is over. (Plus…on sale right now!)
NABI JR 4GB TABLET
The nabi Jr is Cool Mom Tech’s top recommendation for a first tablet for kids—the price is wildly good, especially considering it’s a fully functioning Android tablet that still has all the bells, whistles, educational apps, and safety functionality you’d want. Terrific for preschool through kindergarten and maybe even a little beyond. You can even use it yourself.
KIDZ GEAR VOLUME LIMITING HEADPHONES
Even though my kids are still young enough to listen to me when I tell them to keep the volume on headphones low, I still feel much more comfortable with volume limiting headphones. These happen to have decent sound quality, and they’re really made to be comfortable for kids, whether they’re listening to music, or watching a movie on a cross-country trip with the family. (In which case I send you good travel juju for bulkhead seats and a tear-free flight.)
XBOX ONE
Yeah it’s a huge splurge, but the truth is, this isn’t just for the kids—this is going to be your family’s new entertainment hub, with access to streaming movies, music, apps, and of course all the awesome Kinect games. And hello…voice commands! This one is on my wish list too. For my children, I mean.
