Alexander’s Surgery and Hospital Visit

I’ve been getting a ton of emails asking me how Alex’s surgery went and exactly what he had done. I was so nervous about it, I honestly forgot to even blog about it — which to be honest, isn’t normally like me.

When Alex’s 2 front “big” teeth started to grow in we noticed that his left “big” tooth was growing in completely sideways. I kept joking with my husband that he was getting his teeth from me because I had a horrible time as a tween with fang teeth growing in, sideways teeth growing in and an extra tooth here and there. It was very tough, I actually had to have 10 teeth removed before I was 13 years old.

So when I saw Alex’s teeth… believe me, I got it. I felt bad for the little guy.

I made an appointment for him with a local Pediatric Orthodontist to see if we should be doing anything. I wasn’t prepared for the news he gave us, it looked like Alex had a 3rd front tooth growing in above his 2 “big teeth” that were already in. The only thing we could do was to have it removed. It was actually messing up the formation of his teeth on the whole left side. When immediately got him to an oral surgeon. Since Alex was born with a small hole in his heart that hasn’t closed up yet, he recommended we do it at the Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence and not his office. I felt VERY comfortable with that decision.

I originally made the appt for June 17th.

Then cancelled it because I was so nervous about it.

Then I made an appt for the end of June.

Then cancelled it.

Then I made an appt for mid-July.

Then cancelled it.

I think the secretary wanted to kill me. I was just SO NERVOUS and I was pregnant at the time and just didn’t want to be worried about Alex going under. I thought the nerves would actually put me IN labor!

Finally I knew it had to be done, so when I called back the secretary said that they literally only had 2 appointments available over the next 4 months – August 27th and November 7th.

I opted for the 27th one.

And so… off we went!

Alex was a trooper and a rockstar throughout the whole process!

He was swollen when we left and groggy, but after being home for an hour – he was back to being Alex again.

As a matter of fact, he even went to school the next day.

I just want to give a shout out to the Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence. They were AMAZING. They were patient and kind and sweet and made Alex feel like a million bucks. It meant the world to me.

So glad your experience was positive Audrey and your son is doing well.. It is scary to have your child have surgery.
When my daughter was almost two we had her hemangioma removed. We were worried, but she did great. Just like Alex, she was back to her normal self a few hours after surgery.
