Renovation Series: Creating a DREAM Closet with EasyClosets #3

In continuing my Closet Renovation series with EasyClosets, I wanted today’s posting to be all about the process of our DIY project. We’re HUGE DIY people, especially when it comes to doing things around the house. My husband grew up in a home where his father did many home projects of his own, and I grew up the same way. For my husband, it makes him feel good to be part of the project, not just watch it happen and go up without his help and/or assistance. He also loves having his own sons watch him do projects around our house, which I think is a wonderful.

I was notified by EasyClosets that the boxes containing our closet pieces would be arriving. We were excited to get the project started, especially me because I couldn’t wait for my clothing items to finally have a home! 🙂 The boxes arrived and literally… there were 42 of them!! It was so funny, my sons thought it was the coolest thing to see all the boxes. I’m going to be honest, at first I was overwhelmed by the amount because I wasn’t sure how we were going to fit them all in our house and then organize them accordingly, but… thankfully EasyClosets had already thought of that problem. All of the boxes were given a number and there was one specific box that was clearly marked that it was the box to open first. Ahhh… relief! Thank you EasyClosets!

Once my husband had the boxes laid out according to the order they were supposed to be opened in, we were ready to rock and roll! Unfortunately, since I was 8 months pregnant at the time, I wasn’t able to physically help, so all I could do was read instructions and help out any other way possible (getting water, playing music, sitting up there and chatting with Matt and constantly checking in). The good thing was that we had the layout in front of us, so we were able to see what was to come and what we needed to put up.

We did run into a few issues, and I have to say – I was BEYOND impressed with EasyClosets and how they helped us through them quickly and easily.

This is what we ran into:

When we sent Denise our measurements of our interior closet from the room, we didn’t know that one of the walls curved on the right-hand side. Due to that, we weren’t able to fit the shelving in that was custom cut for us. We immediately got in touch with EasyClosets, explained our situation. They were so supportive and re-assured us that it wasn’t a big deal. They shipped out shelving that would fit perfectly and sent us a shipping slip to resend back the old shelving. It was as easy as can be! We were so nervous about giving the wrong measurements, and it was wonderful to have a company work with us and make sure everything worked out.

We bought our house in 2005, before that… it only had one owner and they had lived here since 1968. Each room in our house has an old speaker system in it, literally from the 1970s. When we were measuring the walls in the room, we didn’t even stop to think that the speaker jutting out of the wall 3 inches would be a big deal, but it was. We needed the shelves to work flush against the wall, and with the speaker system, it wouldn’t be able to do that. My husband had to take the speaker out, patch it and repaint it. It ended up delaying our project a little, but it’s something to keep in mind for future projects. We need to make sure we assess all hangings on the wall or anything that might be an obstacle to the project at hand.

Outlets! Oh, mama mia! We didn’t account for our outlets either. We were able to easily work around this issue, but we knew that we almost ran into the problem of covering 3 outlets in the room with the shelves and closet space. It was something, again, we hadn’t thought about, but now know going forward it’s important to keep in mind.

It took my husband about 4 full days to get the full closet up and done. I was amazed as to how easy it was for him. He literally followed the instructions step by step, and it was a breeze to keep the project going for him. My husband LOVES projects like this, so for him… he was in renovation heaven. Being there with him throughout the process, I will say, even if you’re someone who isn’t comfortable with doing DIY projects, EasyClosets makes it very doable and easy and convenient.
