Summer Safety – Are you READY!?

It’s officially almost summer, first day of the new season is June 21! But for me and the boys, the signal of summer is the school year coming to close which means the kids will be around the house much more than usual.  Make sure your home is ready for them by doing a safety survey of each room, including the laundry room.  Visit www.homemadesimple.com/safehome for important tips

Summer is “official” for my 3 older guys on June 24th and for my youngest guy… he’s already done for the year! We literally had a preschool “How many days left of school?” countdown going for Henry from May 1st on… and for my oldest guys, we still have one going (10 more days!). Every morning I get to hear the question, “MOM! Guess how many more days!?” And every morning I pretend to “forget!” It gets them even more excited for the kick-off to summer — school being out!

As much as summer vacation is a time for my sons to relax, kick back and enjoy the warm weather at the pool or the beach, a great part of their summer break is spent at home. My sons are still on the young side at 5, 6, 7 and 8… and with a new baby due in July… I absolutely need to make sure our home is summer safe.

P&G Safe Home is making this summer easy for you by making sure your home is ready by giving you tips that you can use to take a safety survey of each room, including the laundry room.  For my family, the rooms that I concentrate on and the safety tips I do especially for each room are:

Laundry Room – Detergent and all laundry products are up, away, and locked so nobody can get into it.
Bathrooms – All cleaners are safely locked away in cabinets with locks or safety latches on them.
Bedrooms – All electrical units are covered with plastic safety covers (try to avoid using electrical unit safety plugs as these could be a choking hazard for your little ones) and windows safely locked (we have a/c for the rooms).
Playroom – All electrical units are covered with plastic safety covers and toys are at a safe reach so there’s nobody climbing on furniture to get things (believe me, I have sons).
Kitchen – All kitchen cleaners are locked away and cabinets still have safety locks on them.
Living Room – All electrical units are covered with plastic safety covers and fix or add padding to pieces of furniture that may have sharp edges or corners.

These are the rooms that my sons have full access to and I need to make sure each area is safe and that there’s nothing dangerous for my sons to get into. It may take some time to go through each room, but it’s 100% worth it for me to take my time and make sure every inch is covered (pun intended).

P&G Safe Home shares tips and advice for creating a safe, healthy and happy home. Here is some valuable and important advice for you to bring into your home to make it safe:

Fire Extinguisher
Place a fire extinguisher in your kitchen and every other floor of your home.
Read the instructions that come with the fire extinguisher before you need to use it.
Check extinguisher gauges often, and occasionally turn it over to make sure the contents don’t become compacted at the bottom.

Smoke Alarms
Install battery-powered smoke alarms to be prepared for early warnings of smoke in your home.
Check your local building codes to make sure you have the right kind of smoke detector and enough of them for the size and layout of your home.
Place detectors in bedrooms, and also install battery-powered carbon monoxide alarms on every level of your home.

*We always keep Duracell® batteries in full stock in our house. You never know when you’re going to need them for smoke alarms and/or carbon monoxide detectors. It’s something we’ve always done and our oldest sons even know where they are in case we need their help getting them.

Taking a safe survey of your home is something everyone should do at the beginning of each season, but with summer in particular with the kids home from school, it’s even more important.
