The Changing Roles of Moms and Dads Today by P&G

I was recently invited to a P&G Media Event that was just in time for Mother’s Day for a panel discussion they were hosting on the changing dynamics of the role of Mom and Dad over the past few years.

I wasn’t able to make the event, but was so interested in hearing about the discussion because this is a topic that I’m very passionate about and I love the P&G honed in on it.

They had amazing people on the panel discussing these changes:

Dana Points was the Moderator – Editor-in-Chief of Parents and American Baby
Andrew Shue – CafeMom Co-Founder and Actor (I loved him in Melrose Place!)
Mary Lou Retton – Olympic Gold Medalist and Mother of 4
Kerry Hincka – Mom of Special Olympics Athletes
Lucia Ballus-Traynor – MamasLatinas Co-Founder and Executive VP
Angela Bergeson – Head of School, IDEAL School of Manhattan

Here are some of the findings that P&G found as part of this program… so interesting to me!

I also got the chance to interview the amazing Mary Lou Retton! I have been a fan of Mary Lou for years and I have always just loved her! I was excited to get the opportunity to ask her some questions…

1) With 4 kids, how do you monitor the technology use in your house?

We have full access to computers, tablets, phones 24/7.

2) What are some of your biggest parenting challenges in this “new day” of modern parenting with so much technology?
We know we can’t monitor everything. We try to proactively parent values and morals to our children. Unfortunately, content is out there and we try to let the kids know we are aware and can and will monitor.

3) What are the biggest differences between you parenting now and your mother parenting you?
I feel I am far more involved in parenting than my mother was. Not to say she was not, but we just have to be more engaged in this day and age.

4) What do you feel is a positive about parenting in a digital age?
I love the idea that we can see into our kids worlds via social media. It is fun and also a great way to be in contact with them.

Thank you so much P&G for sharing all of these findings with me, they are so interesting and show such an amazing shift in the changing roles of moms and dads today.
