Angelina Jolie’s Double Breast Mastectomy to Prevent Breast Cancer
This morning as the Today Show started, the leading story was the news of Angelina Jolie undergoing a double breast mastectomy. Immediately I tuned in. As a mom of 4 (almost 5), and as someone who is passionate about spreading awareness for breast cancer, I wanted to see why Angelina did what she did.
As I listened to the story, all I could do was nod my head and understand.
A year and 1/2 ago when they found a GIST tumor in Matt’s abdomen, we made the decision for him to go on a chemo pill for 3 years as a preventative treatment for the tumor to never come back again. His chances of the tumor coming back was about 25%, but his changes of it coming back after being on the chemo pill were less than 10%. We liked those chances a whole lot better.
When I heard that Angelina tested an almost 90% chance of getting breast cancer by carrying a genetic mutation, I completely knew and understood why she did what she did.
I commend her.
I understand her wanting to stay healthy and strong for her children and her family.
I get it.
I get it even more being a wife and a mother.
I would do anything to stay healthy for my children, now and always.
I think her decision was admirable, honest and most of all – brave.
