Daily Diary: Alex gets glasses!

Daily Diary: Alex gets glasses!

Yesterday I got a call from Alex’s school nurse letting me know that Alex failed his eye exam at school. Just to be sure it was accurate, she had him take the eye exam twice, on 2 separate days.  She thought it would be a good idea to bring him to a place to get his eyes examined pretty quickly because he told her “everything was blurry” when he took the test.

I took this very seriously. Eyes are something you don’t want to mess with, especially when it comes to kids.  Alex had never complained to me before about his eyesight, so this was news to me and my husband. I made an appointment immediately for after school at our local Lens Crafters.  The girl was sweet, she said they were booked up, but when she heard it was for a child… she got him in at 5:00PM last night for an eye exam.

The second they took photos of Alex’s eyes, they said… “Yup, he’s probably going to need glasses.”

Still… I wasn’t “sold” on it.

Then they gave him an exam.

I started crying in the corner when he took his test. He didn’t get any of the letters correct. He couldn’t clearly see anything.

How did I miss this?
How did I not know he needed glasses?

My heart sank.

They started adding lens’ to his eyes and all of a sudden… HE COULD SEE.

BOOM!

He’s been wearing them all night!

So far, so good.

    He’s so handsome!

My mom didn’t believe me when I told her I needed glasses at 11 because our eyes deteriorated at the same time so we didn’t know what we were missing. We’ve both been wearing glasses ever since. 🙂

Both of my kids had to get glasses at around 5 years old and now my oldest who is 12 is wearing contacts– they get through it- they get to pick cool frames – for the boys I think it’s a no-brainer- the girls have to learn to make it a part of their personal style. We always have told our kids they are fabulous and that glasses just make them that much cooler!! And judging from these pics Alex is going to rock these frames!!

He looks adorable in them! It’s no longer “uncool” to wear glasses – not like when we were kids! One of Nate’s friends got glasses a few years ago and some of the boys were even jealous!

They have tons of cool frame options out there too now!

Aw, I imagine the revelation must have been stunning. I’m kind of expecting it since neither my husband and I can see a thing w/o assistance. It’s really no big deal since (1) glasses are cool (2) contacts technology has come so far. dailies are awesome. (3) laser correction has come so far if he ever decides he wants a permanent fix. Glad you caught it early and he’s seeing things clearly now 🙂

Welcome to the club. Our little one has been in them since she was 2. I think they are adorable. And MANY parents miss the signs. No guilt.

Oh Audrey, don’t feel bad. Our ped said that since kids don’t really need to see far at school until they get a bit older, the signs aren’t really there unless they are tested.

He’s ROCKIN’ those specs! And I’m sure it’s something we all could miss with wee one. 🙂

Both of my kids wear glasses to read and it was especially rough when my husband figured out that our then five year old was having trouble seeing the words on the page and we had missed it. I felt horrible!! Here’s the great news – our boys look pretty darn cute in specs, don’t they? 🙂

Oh, I bawled my eyes out when they told me our Emily needed glasses. On top of that, we have had to patch her eye because she had stopped using one of them. I am just glad we figured it out when we did. I remember being in 7th grade before we knew that I couldn’t see and how vivid everything was. He looks adorable in them! You are a great mama! xoxo

What a cutie pie! When our oldest needed glasses it showed up on the ball field before in class and was so bad! It seemed all of a sudden he couldn’t catch the baseball very consistently so we asked what was up. He said things were blurry until the ball was just about to hit him ~ hello!!! Don’t feel bad Mom ~ their bodies can change swiftly.

He’s adorable! My son had to get glasses (at age 12) and refuses to wear them. Sigh…. his doc says he’s “borderline” so I don’t push it. I guess if it gets bad enough, he’ll comply, right?

    Alex looks great in them!
