“Slugs and snails and puppy-dogs’ tails”… and a rat

What Are Little Boys Made Of, anyway…

According to the little 18th century nursery rhyme, little boys are made of slugs and snails and puppy-dogs’ tails, with no mention of rats:

What are little boys made of?
Slugs and snails
And puppy-dogs’ tails,
That’s what little boys are made of.

But I know differently.

Because this is what I was greeted with early yesterday morning as I headed into my daughter Audrey’s home to babysit for her 4 boys (ages 4, 5, 7, 8) while she and her husband headed to an OB appointment…

I nearly fainted.

Then realized that it’s a rubber rat.

Didn’t stop my heart, though.

7-year old Alex greeted me at the door with his dazzling smile and gigantic hugs.  I said, “Alex, that rat scared the daylights out of me!”

He answered… you know, in a total boy casual way, “Oh, that’s been out there since Halloween.”

Oh.

OK.

Guess I didn’t notice it under all the fall leaves and winter snow. (And I’m guessing that rat’ll be there ’til next Halloween?!)

Anyway, that OB appointment?  That was a check up on their new baby, due in July.  A GIRL.

What’s that little nursery rhyme about girls?

What are little girls made of?
Sugar and spice
And all things nice.
That’s what little girls are made of.

Um. Maybe not in this house!

Ewewewew! I know that baby girl will certainly be nice, but all that sugar and spice might be taken over by a few slugs, snails and (fake) rats!

LOL! I thought you were going to say they planted it there on purpose to give you a scare! It would have freaked me out too!
