The road taken

Choosing between flat or hills on a run…

I think about a lot of things while I’m running.  Important things. Random things. Problem-solving things.  This, I think, is why I’ve come to love running so much since I began this endeavor a bit over 4 years ago.

Today, Robert Frost crept into my random ramblings.

When I headed out this morning, I decided to run toward Colt State Park.  I love running in the park.  I did most of my long runs in the park while training for Marine Corps Marathon this past summer and fall… and I know literally every inch of it!  (An injury and lots of physical therapy kept me from running for awhile, so running has a newness to it again.)

But anyway, I ran past the two big bulls at the gate and headed downhill and straight toward Bristol Town Beach.  It was FRIGID down there, but exhilarating frigid.  I knew I’d run about 1.5 miles when I turned around to head home.

This is when Robert Frost joined me.

My house is right off the bike path, about a 1/2 mile toward town from the park.  The hill I just ran down is… well, a steady uphill hill back.

Two roads.

The Road Not Taken

Ah, sorry I could not travel both…

And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Well, I didn’t really stand long.  I didn’t stand at all, for that matter.  As I ran,  I looked down the flat path home.  I looked at the hill ahead.

Two roads diverged.

I took the easy path…

Nice and flat.

How I wished that both that morning equally lay.  This one easy.  The other one so hard.  But they were different.

And I turned around…

To take the other path.

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I… took the more difficult one.

And that has made all the difference.

Great post. I can’t help but be a bit envious of your cerebral running thoughts of Robert Frost and other serious matters. Mine are much less evolved and typically consist of “just one more mile, you can do this… don’t be a wuss you’re almost there…”. My husband’s runs are plagued with thoughts of challenging math equations. Yuck. I guess it doesn’t matter – as long as we all get out there and do it. I appreciate this thought provoking read.
