Flintstones Vitamins partners with Vitamin Angels to spread word about 10 Million Stronger!

When I was a little girl, every morning when I came downstairs for breakfast, my mother would have my vitamin ready for me along with my cereal.

Every. Single. Morning.

Those vitamins?  Always Flintstones Vitamins.

ALWAYS.

I was obsessed with the orange and purple ones, so my mother, being the wonderful mother she was, would always make sure me and my sister had our favorite flavors.

It was part of my childhood routine.

As I became a mother myself to 4 little boys, the ONLY brand I have ever given my sons has been the iconic Flintstones Vitamins.  There’s something comforting as a mother to know that I’m giving my sons a Flintstones vitamin every single morning with a healthy breakfast, just like my mother did for me when I was a little girl.  Flintstones Vitamins is the pediatricians’ #1 brand choice for children’s chewables, and for someone like me, since my sons are picky eaters, I love knowing they’re getting important nutrients. They provide key essential vitamins and minerals, including vitamins A, D and C, to support children’s health and development.

It’s incredible to think that Flintstones Vitamins has been inspiring parents to make their children part of the “ten million strong and growing” since the iconic jingle made its commercial debut nearly 30 years ago.  It’s something that I identify with because I’m one of “those” children from 30 years ago when it all began.  My mother could still, to this day, recite the jingle!

In line with their storied heritage, Bayer HealthCare, the makers of Flintstones Vitamins, announced that they have teamed up with Vitamin Angels to launch 10 Million Stronger, a charitable initiative aimed at delivering key essential vitamin A to 10 million children worldwide suffering from vitamin A deficiency.  This is something that can be a major underlying cause of child mortality and blindness, it’s very serious and very dangerous.

Flintstones Vitamins wants to do something about this. With their launch of 10 Million Stronger, they want to give these children the chance to grow up strong and healthy.

While vitamin A deficiency is serious and potentially fatal, it can be prevented.  Two high-dose vitamin A capsules can provide one child with sufficient vitamin A for one year.  This alone can reduce under-five child mortality by about 24% in populations at risk of vitamin A deficiency.  It can also help prevent and reverse one of the most severe effects of vitamin A deficiency, xerophthalmia, a disorder of the eye that can lead to permanent blindness.

To kick off 10 Million Stronger, in its inaugural year, the maker of Flintstones Vitamins will donate $300,000 in 2012 to Vitamin Angels (www.vitaminangels.org), helping to fund essential vitamin A for more than 1 million children in need.

1 MILLION children.

I think it’s just remarkable.

Through the Flintstones Vitamins Facebook page (www.facebook.com/FlintstonesVitamins), 10 Million Stronger also encourages the community to get involved through donations, as well as raising awareness of this important initiative.  It’s important for the community, especially parents, to join together and do our part in spreading awareness to as many people as we can.  If you start with Facebook, you can share with all of your own friends and just see the message grow and spread organically.

I have heard of Vitamin Angels before, but wasn’t truly aware of what they exactly did.  Vitamin Angels is a non-profit organization, reduces child mortality worldwide by providing essential nutrients with infants and children under five.  Their mission is to mobilize and deploy private sector resources to advance availability, access and use of micronutrients, especially vitamin A, among at-risk populations in need.

“Vitamin Angels is thrilled to partner with Flintstones Vitamins,” says Howard Schiffer, Founder and President, Vitamin Angels.  “We share a common goal – to help nourish children around the world.  And thanks to Flintstones Vitamins’ generous donation, we’ll be able to provide vitamin A to more than a million additional children in need.”

For me, there’s something very special about seeing a brand I love and use doing something so exceptional.

I feel honored to have Flintstones Vitamins on my shelf.
