Daily Diary: How to Help Benjamin with his Letters and Sounds

My Benjamin has been having a tough time in Kindergarten understanding all of the letters and their sounds.  As his mother, it breaks my heart to see him struggling a bit with this right now.  I know he “knows” the letters, but when he’s put on the spot and asked (in front of a group) he gets very nervous and doesn’t answer.  We’ve been trying a few different things at home to help him understand the letters and sounds inside out (repetition seems to be working), but I want Ben to have FUN while we’re doing this. I don’t want him to think that it’s school at home all the time, that’s not fun for him (or me).

We’ve done workbooks.

We’ve read books.

We’ve sang songs.

But we started doing something earlier this week that Ben is going CRAZY for (in a good way!).  I made GIGANTIC letters out of poster board paper.

Each day I’ve been having Ben (and Henry) randomly pick a letter. Whatever letter they pick then becomes the “Letter of the Day!”

The boys love it!

Today Ben’s letter was “C.” I then ask him to tell me 2 words that begin with the letter “C” and he tells me the sound it makes. He gets “K” confused with “C”, so this literally is the PERFECT and EASY way for me to help him.

(He walks around the house looking for things that begin with the letter of the day. Today is was Coffee and Cup.)

Then I have him color the letter in… he uses any colors he wants, he’s just supposed to make it “pretty!”

This has been such a great way for us to work with Ben on his letters and sounds.

Any additional suggestions????
