P&G everyday Resolution: A Technology Break

My P&G everyday resolution today?

A technology break.

It’s time and it’s necessary.

There’s nothing I love more than being a digital mom. Not many people can say that they wake up every single morning excited to go to work. I’m fortunate enough to feel that way about what I do. I have embraced blogging and have made the ever growing list of social media “tools” a part of my life. And I love it.

I get to share everything I want about my life on my blog. I have shared personal stories. I have shared my advice and tips. I have shared photos and videos of me and my family. I have shared everything, opening up a piece of who I am (and my family) through my personal social media outlets.

My blog is my life, truly… and I support my family of 6 through my social media work. It’s something I’m very proud of and quite honestly, work extremely hard at. There hasn’t been one day in my life since I started all of this where I haven’t been digitally connected. It’s part of who I am.

But… with all that being said, as I’ve gotten more and more ingrained in the world of being a digital mom, I’m beginning to see just how important and necessary it is to take technology breaks — not just for me, but for my family. It’s not something I’m good at doing. I’m not good at it at all. I LOVE to work. It’s something that fuels me in a way that I can’t quite explain. It’s my love and my passion. It’s actually the one and only thing that causes any friction in my family… the fact that I’m always connected. On the pool deck. On the baseball field. On the weekends. On vacation. At the school play. Since I’m able to be connected, I always take the opportunity to actually be connected.

It’s time to instill some technology breaks into my life.

Truthfully, I don’t want my sons to think that it’s “OK” or “normal” to always be connected. My habits are teaching them, and it’s imperative for them to see me without my “digital accessories”.. It’s extremely important to me to spread this message to my sons through my own personal technology breaks.

So… How does a digital mom make a resolution like this throughout the summer?

Morning time when we’re making breakfast from 7-8AM… I’m not online.

Swim meets and swimming lessons… I won’t be connected.

And most important? Dinnertime I’m offline.

Believe me, it’s not easy for me to just disconnect, but it’s something I know I need to do. I’m always available on email and Twitter and Facebook throughout the day, and I need to realize that nothing earth-shattering is going to happen if I’m not suddenly available for an hour or two here and there throughout the day.

My sons are my life. They are my reasons for doing what I do. They’re the 4 reasons I’m a digital mom. I want to them to know that I work hard and love what I do, but not at a cost to them.

I’m making this an important P&G everyday resolution. One that will add more balance into my work life.
