Giving back to the community is something that’s very important to me. It’s something that I was raised doing and I’m happy to have this be one of my P&G everyday resolutions.
My mother and father were teachers at a high school in Rhode Island that had many at-risk students. When I say this, I mean truly that their students were at-risk of not graduating and at-risk of dropping out. Many of the students my parents taught were in foster care and had parents who had just given up on them. I remember my mother going to school so many mornings with bags filled with jackets, shoes, scarves and hats, sweaters and pants because her students needed them. Needed, not wanted. It left an impression.
Throughout my childhood my mother would always have my sister and I donate clothing at the end of each season to a local shelter or donation center. We were very lucky little girls to have clothes and toys and books, and my mother always instilled in us the importance of giving back. We would sit for hours going through our closets and toy chests finding items to donate to other kids our age. My mother always had us go with her to the donation center, to make it a real experience for us. It absolutely left an impression.
Throughout the years I’ve tried to keep up with this. I know that I’m not changing the world, but I do know that a simple pair of pants can go a long way.
My resolution today is to continue this tradition with my sons. My sons are lucky little guys to have a large family that loves them and showers them with clothing and toys and wonderful things that they love. So many kids don’t have that. With the start of every new season from here on out, I will be going through the boys’ things and my stuff and finding items to donate to a local center here in Rhode Island.
It’s amazing how good doing something like this can make you feel.
I have to admit, this is one of my most favorite resolutions so far because I actually feel like it’s helping someone else, and that’s a beautiful thing.
