I stopped by Audrey’s home this morning to pick up a couple of things she had for my Mom.
I left Audrey’s home with those couple of things… and with my afternoon-Kindergarten grandson, Alex.
Alex and I had a quick hour to fill before school. And fill it, we did. With PANCAKES and Reddi-wip!
You must understand that Grandma is not the PANCAKE-maker in our family. Pop-up is. Pop-up has a secret family recipe that’s been passed down from his Grandma… Mamie Bell. I was lucky enough to meet Barry’s grandmother, who was called Mamie by everyone she knew, including her grandchildren.
Mamie taught NanaFlo this secret pancake recipe. NanaFlo taught Barry.
The problem with Barry knowing the secret is that as many times as he’s passed it along to his 4 children… they all keep coming back for HIS pancakes, bringing their children.
But today, 6-year old Alex asked ME to make pancakes for lunch.
WHAT!!??
Believe me, I made my share of pancakes pre-Barry, but WHAT!!??
“Honey, Pop-up is the pancake-maker in this family,” I found myself saying.
“Can’t you make them like Pop-up does?” Alex asked… then he added, “Can you try?”
How could I refuse?
And even if I wanted to, Alex was already gathering Pop-up’s ingredients for pancakes:
bacon
pancake mix
milk
vegetable oil
Reddi-wip (can’t have pancakes without it!)
… and taking out Pop-up’s special red mixing bowl, measuring cup, wire whisk and my Mom’s spatula.
This kid’s good, I was thinking. Alex is channeling Mamie, NanaFlo, Barry & Audrey!
And the rest is 5-generations (count ’em) of pancake perfection, from Mamie Bell to NanaFlo to Barry to Audrey to Alex…
Alex devoured his lunch-time PANCAKES WITH REDDI-WIP… telling me that I did a very good job with Pop-up’s Pancake Recipe.
WHAT!!??
I have the photos to prove that Alex was in charge today… as the Pancake Keeper. It’s in his blood-line.
That… and the secrets of bacon grease & whipped cream!
Yes, it was one heckuva good lunch.
