Today I am 31 years old.
Brian always makes fun of me (jokingly, of course) because I take a lot of headshots of myself on my iPhone.
It’s not that I’m vain. Sometimes I just want to know if I look the same way I feel (whether it’s refreshed, tired, pretty, unattractive… you get the picture – pun intended). Sometimes I use it as a mirror of sorts when there’s no mirror around and I want to do a quick look-check. Sometimes it’s just a fun way to pass the time. And sometimes I just want to document the way I looked on a certain day.
It’s always fun to look back on photos taken years earlier, to see if the way you felt at the time matches what you see in the photo now.
This is my headshot today, the morning of my 31st birthday, with no make-up and just one cup of coffee:
Yes, I see the crow’s feet, crooked teeth, messy hair and the other little imperfections here and there that we all see in ourselves… but I’m trying to look at the photo the way I will see it in the future.
I try to picture what my future children will say when I show them this photo of me the day I turned 31, whether it will be, “You look the same, Mom!” or “That’s you!?”
As for me, I think I will see a happy, grateful 31-year-old woman with a genuine smile.

You look gorgeous as always – healthy and energetic and beautiful – but the most wonderful thing about that picture is that you’re so palpably happy. Nobody could give you that gift, you had to go out and find it for yourself. And you DID!
