I’m Confirmed!

On Sunday I made my Confirmation.

Yes, I was baptized and made my First Communion “on time” – as in, as a baby and in second grade, respectively.

Yes, I began taking Confirmation classes when I was in 10th grade.

No, I never finished them, and I was not Confirmed then.

Yes, on Sunday I was about twice as old as the rest of my Confirmation “class”.

Not having been Confirmed was never really an issue until I met a nice Catholic boy.

I remember Brian telling me on our first date that he likes to hold himself to a higher standard and does so through his belief in God.

He attends church regularly – and now I do, too.

Even before we got engaged, I knew it would be important for Brian to get married in the Catholic church. And so, it became important to me.

During the homily at my Confirmation Mass, the Bishop talked about our responsibilities as newly Confirmed members of the church, like really thinking about our choices and taking the high road in situations.

As an almost-31-year-old woman, I think I took his words to heart more than I would have had I made my Confirmation back when I was “supposed” to. Not that I was ever immoral, or someone who made a lot of bad decisions, but life experience over the last 15 years or so has proved to me that really trying to be a good person and taking the high road just makes me feel better as a human being.

If it weren’t for Brian, I’m not sure if I would have ever gotten Confirmed. But I am happy I did. Not only because we can get married in the Catholic church, but because it was another opportunity to show Brian how important his love, convictions and beliefs are to me.

Congrats! My husband also went through confirmation before our wedding, as my faith is very important to me as well. We’ve been married over 3 years, and it still means a lot to me!

It’s funny, the church where you got confirmed is the church I got baptized and made my first holy communion in! It looks so different, haven’t been there in a long time!

Congratulations Jane. I think you’ll find that having your faith be an important part of your marriage will make a big difference. At least it certainly has in my own marriage. Being catholic is something else that your mom and I have in common.

Jane… I am very happy for you that you made the decision to be confirmed. As you said in your post, the words of Bishop Tobin probably had more of a meaning at this time in your life than they would have had as a young teenager. I love you and I’m happy and proud.
