Interview with Two-time Olympic Gold Medalist Kerri Walsh

I’ve always been real big on breakfast with my sons. I tribute this to my own parents, they always made sure all of us (my sister and 2 brothers included!) had a healthy, filling breakfast before school and before Saturday sports. I’ll never forget Saturday mornings growing up, I was a swimmer… had to be at practice at 4AM and my mother getting up with me and making sure I had food in my system. Makes me smile to think back to those days.

Kellogg’s was always a staple in my home growing up. And well, history is repeating itself with my own family. My Special K is my go-to breakfast cereal… and for my sons, Frosted Flakes. As they like to say, “They’re GRREEAATTTT!” 🙂

I’ve been working with Kellogg’s company for over a year now… and I am just always blown away by their dedication and passion for spreading the importance of breakfast message. As a mom, it warms my heart to see a company caring and helping!

And now… they’re helping the Olympic 2012 athletes!

Kellogg Company –who has been helping athletes and people everywhere start their day right with breakfast for more than 100 years—joins Team USA in the countdown to the 2010 Olympics and announces Team Kellogg’s. This amazing group of athletes will remind fans everywhere that each day is filled with the potential to achieve your goals when you start it off right, a strong message for kids everywhere!

Kellogg’s recently gave me the opportunity to interview the incredible two-time volleyball Olympic gold medalist, Kerri Walsh — also a BOY mom! 🙂

I was very excited to chat with Kerri about motherhood, breakfast routines and what gets her moving and motivated!

1. We’re both boy moms! 🙂 Tell me, how has motherhood changed your life?
Motherhood has made my life better in every way. I am more fulfilled, more balanced, more apt to not sweat the small stuff that used to drive me crazy. It has deepened my relationship with my husband and my parents (I get it now!). My boys give me infinite love and inspiration. Motherhood has made me stronger in so many ways and it has made me better at my job … I plan to work hard & show the world just how great a mother can be on the beach volleyball court! Motherhood is the ultimate gift and I thank the Lord for my little angels every day. Aside from all those wonderful things, motherhood has stolen my sleep – not a bad trade off!

2. What is it about the Kellogg’s message that you love?
I truly believe in the importance of starting your day off right and with Kellogg’s that means starting your day with a delicious breakfast; this is a simple yet profound mission. Personally, my day is way more productive, I feel better, I’m less moody, I’m a better, more patient mother and I am a more focused, higher performing athlete when I make the decision to start my day off with a good breakfast. I see the benefits in my kids, in my husband and in myself. Our family understands the importance of starting off on the right foot and that is why I love the message Kellogg’s sends out. Get a great start and just see how far you can go!

3. Why is it so important to have a good breakfast? How do you bring this into your family life, too?
Our kids are early risers, so we generally get to enjoy our breakfasts together before my husband and I head off to work. Morning is one of our most favorite times as a family. The boys are happy, hilarious and having tons of fun. My husband and I sit back and watch our babies and get breakfast ready. We’re all good eaters and we all look forward to breakfast. We want to create this habit for our children so they’ll take it with them their whole lives… To start their days with breakfast. No if’s, and’s, or but’s about it.

4. What’s your personal favorite breakfast?
Kellogg’s Raisin Bran is my all time favorite way to start my day! It’s quick, convenient, healthy and delicious.

5. How are you prepping right now for London 2012?
I’m working my buns off! We are currently in our off season, so I won’t be on the court for a while yet. I am taking this time to let my body recover from season. I am doing a lot of Pilates and physical therapy to address my not so perfect parts. I am in the gym lifting twice a week. We try to pack on our muscle in the off season because we lean out pretty quickly once season starts. I’m putting on my winter coat, which I have a love/hate relationship with 🙂 I do some type of cardio 3 times a week but I’m going to begin some specialized training with my trainer so my cardio will be taken to the next level (track workouts, hills, hikes, beach work, so much fun stuff ahead). I am in the water at least once a week jumping, kicking, working my arms. This is my favorite zero impact activity.
A new addition to my prep for the London Games is my work with a company called Neurotopia. It is amazing! Basically they are training my brain like it’s a muscle. Getting it to work more efficiently and more effectively. I cannot wait to see the improvements in my life and in my game!

6. Anything else you’d like to share?
Misty and I want to win gold in London more than I can ever begin to express. We will leave no stone unturned! I am so grateful to Kellogg’s for making me part of their team because they are allowing me to chase this huge dream of mine. I want to win gold as a mom and I love that such an iconic, family oriented brand is behind myself, my family and behind all of Team USA.

How amazing is she??

Go TEAM USA!!
