Celebrate 75 Years with Windex (and GIVEAWAY)

Can you believe Windex is 75 years old!? The iconic brand has been around my whole life and my mother’s whole life, too! Windex has always been a household staple, especially in mine, and there’s never been a time when it has not been readily available in my cabinet.

I’m excited to share that America’s No.1 glass cleaner is celebrating its 75th birthday by looking back through time and inviting Americans to share their own traditions and shining moments in their everyday life.

I’m honored to be one of Windex’s Shining Moms, along with Amber Johnson of MileHighMamas.com and Amy Clark of MomAdvice.com. Be sure to check out their blogs to find out some of their shining moments and visit the official Windex Facebook Page to learn more about the amazing history of Windex in America. On Facebook, you can share your shining moments and favorite family traditions.

My shining moments occurred in my Nana’s house, back in the early 1980s on Cedarwood Drive. I still drive by that yellow house on the block and it makes me happy. So many traditions and shining moments happened there.

My Nana was my best friend, even as a child. We would do everything together, from cooking and baking to sewing and shopping. I can’t forget cleaning! I used to watch Nana clean her house and I was her little helper throughout the whole process. I didn’t realize it at the time, but she was instilling in me a sense of pride and accomplishment in keeping a happy home and happy life. My Nana was the most domestic woman I had ever known and she loved making sure the house was clean and spectacular. I always wanted to be that way for my own family and I now have the opportunity to be just like her.

I cherish those memories from long ago, those shining moments that I will never forget, and I love that Windex is honoring these moments in celebration of its 75 years! Windex has withstood the test of time, adapted to changing family needs and lifestyles, and innovated itself throughout the years to become the iconic brand it is today.

What does your family love to do year after year? Is there someone in your life who has created shining moments for you? I’m excited to hear your thoughts through the Windex Family Traditions Prize Pack Giveaway!

Our cousin started the tradition of the Phantom ghost at Halloween. She left my son a little Halloween package from the Phantom Ghost and now we do it for our neighborhood kids and frineds.

Our favorite tradition is Thanksgiving dinner. We use our traditional family recipes passed down through the generations. Each person brings their yummiest dish. We use the family linens and china and make new family memories each year as we remember those who cannot be with us.

My family loves the Christmas season. We start off by putting the advent wreath on the kitchen table four weeks prior to Christmas. We light one candle the first week at dinnertime and say a short prayer. The second week another candle is lit and so on… When the kids were young, they couldn’t wait to have the honor of lighting a candle each night. On Christmas day we exchange the four melted candles with four brand new white candles. My mother has lived with my husband and I and our four kids (now young adults) for over 25 years. My mother is truly my shining light.

We love, love, love the holidays! Our favorite tradition is decorating for any holiday – Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. We have an airblown spider for our yard for Halloween, to say the least has seen better days, but we still have to get it out every year, duct tape it some more, and put it in out front yard. I even tried to replace it, but they don’t make it anymore and my kids think it’s just not Halloween without the blow-up spider. We have that same attachment to things I have used to decorate all their lives – a set of Pilgrims for Thanksgiving and a Cookie plate for Santa. We just love the holidays!

I’ve saved the cards we’ve given each other and then “recycle” them on another year. It’s always a game to see if my husband remembers the card from a previous year. “Hey! I got this card last year!” It’s become a running joke, especially on Father’s Day when I give him the cards from when the girls were little.

My favorite tradition is at Christmas. When I was a little girl, we made name ornaments for the whole family. You know the kind you make with glue and glitter. My dad died when I was 22 and my mom remarried six years later. She didn’t feel it was right to take my dads ornament with her. I got the pleasure of getting the ornament. Now every year when we put up our Christmas tree, dads ornament is always the first to go on the tree. After all these years (34), I still miss my dad every day, but this one little tradition keeps him a very special part of our Christmas.

Traditions – for Fall – we visit a Pumpkin patch and take family pictures.

every year for Thanksgiving, we “adopt” 2 airmen. We pick them up, feed them, play games, and take them back to their base. SUPER fun!

for Black Friday, my Mom spends the night and we get up at 3am to go shopping – LOVE that quality time!

for Christmas, we have a spaghetti dinner, open presents, then Santa visits, and in the morning we have sour dough pancakes. SOOOO much fun!

My favorite – I don’t know if I can pick – but I love ALL of those! 🙂 (My parents we major influencers of my traditions.)

One of the favorite traditions I’ve created with my children is a visit to the same pumpkin patch each year for pictures.

I have very fond memories of my childhood. My mom was an at-home mom and we were always doing cool things – Bible studies every morning before school, pulling taffy, trips to the park…

The one person who shined light and hope and inspiration was my grandmother. Growing up with a working mom, no guilt implied,my grandmother stepped in and was my caregiver during the day and after school. I have so many memories, but the one that sticks out in my mind is the times she would take long walks. I can still picture her in her one of her cotton dresses she had made herself wearing her tennis shoes with her camera slung around her neck. Had she had access to the internet as we know it I know she would have been blogging. During our walks she loved to take pictures. Pictures of me of course, but her passion was finding the oddities we would find while we walked around the neighborhood. She captured butterflies and birds and dogs and cats. She would take pictures of other people’s flowers and yard decorations. If we saw someone and they captured her interest she would even ask to take pictures of them even if we would never see them again. During these times we would talk. Talk about everything and anything. I have many scrapbooks to this day that I cherish. She shined her light on me by giving me an appreciation life and for people. She never met a stranger. She shared her love of life with me through her pictures and willingness to take the time to talk to me during these walks. We talked about everything and anything. My grandmother plays a big part in who I am today. I miss Nona, so very much.

As a kid, my Great Grandmother lived with us. Every fall, usually the beginning of October, she would start making pies for the holidays. Some we would keep and others would be given away. Every day would be dedicated to a different pie and I think she made every pie a person could think of. The blueberry and the apple were my favorite and it’s because I went blueberry picking every summer with her and I would always help her peel the apples. My great grandmother passed away when I was 18 and from then on I have continued to make her pies EXACTLY how she did (just not quite so many). I have twin girls now that help me in the kitchen and I love that they are learning the techniques to a recipe that has been passed on to at least 4 generation now. When the pie making is done, I love how easy Windex wipes help to clean up the mess and they make it easy for my girls to help clean up too.

Year after year, generation after generation, both my and my husband’s families have been a huge part of the annual Philadelphia Mummers Parade on New Years Day. Our fathers, Grandfathers and even Great Grandfathers have all been a part of this part of this Philadelphia history. My husband (along with my Dad, his Dad, his brother and much of the extended family) continue the tradition each year. My 8 year old son has also started marching with them each year and is currently learning to play the saxophone to eventually perform with them as well. Every New Years Day we head to the parade to enjoy the show and keep the family tradition alive.

I have always been a die-hard fan of Original Windex; lately, I have been using Windex mixed with vinegar and water because my grandma told me years ago that that was her secret to streak-free glass surfaces….I didn’t know until now that there was a Windex Multi-Surface Vinegar..I don’t know how I missed that !
I guess I will have to search our area stores for that one and try it =)
