JUNE BUGS: The Water Measurer on Day 174 of 365 Days of Literacy for Kids!

Let’s have a little fun, a little learning and a little YIKES! today with the WATER MEASURER:

The Water Measurer

Not many creatures on earth are able to literally walk on water… but the Water Measurer is one that can.

The Water Measurer gets its name from its appearance of slowly, methodically and deliberately measuring water without breaking its surface.  The long, thin body (8 – 11 mm) of the Water Measurer is straight like a ruler or yardstick…  perfect for skimming the surface film of sluggish waters in ponds, streams and pools.  The walking on water is actually accomplished by the tiny hairs on the Water Measurer’s feet, which repel the water while supporting its weight.

The Water Measurer preys on water fleas, mosquito larvae and midges… and eats dying or dead insects and small animals.  The Water Measurer is also carnivorous.  YIKES!

Other characteristics of the Water Measurer are its long, thin legs, elongated head, bulging eyes, antennae, and a mouth that captures and pins live insects, including other Water Measurers.  Look out if you’re another Water Measurer!

Introduce your kids and grandkids to the Water Measurer.  It’s very interesting that the Water Measurer is a boat community insect… along with whirligigs, pond skaters and other top-of-the-surface water insects.   The methodical Water Measurer is the slowest of these boat insects, though!

Join me each day in June for JUNE BUGS on 365 Days of Literacy for Kids! – a little fun, a little learning and a little YIKES!
