The DAY LILY… The Day Lily gets it name from the Greek word Hemerocallis, meaning day (hemera) and beautiful (kalos). This name is perfect for the Day Lily because its flowers open at sunrise and wither at sunset… lasting one day, but generally replaced by another beautiful flower the very next Day.

The Day Lily is known as a symbol of Purity, and is highly regarded in China as “Wong Yu”, meaning Forgetting Worries. The Day Lily also symbolizes Love and Respect of mothers, and the Day Lily is loved around the world for the enchanting way it renews itself each day.

The Day Lily is used as a lovely ornamental flower in flower beds, pots and gardens, but the Day Lily also thrives in the wild, giving it the nicknames Roadside Day Lily and Railroad Day Lily. The Day Lily is greatly admired for its strength, persistence and prolific blooms, whether cultivated or wild.

Head outside with your kids today and discover the lively Day Lily. Look for them in yellows, golds, oranges, coppers, reds, pale pinks and near-whites. Just about the only color the Day Lily isn’t is blue. Cut the stalks and bring them inside in vases. The Day Lilywill bloom inside, too! Practice Wong Yu with your Day Lilies and your kids… maybe your Day Lilies will open lines of communication to help solve all worries.

Tomorrow is Mother’s Day. Why not bring a gift of Day Lilies to mothers, grandmothers or special ladies in your lives… and have your kids explain the symbolism of Love and Respect as you give them. Give a gift that keeps on blooming… in both hearts and minds!
