PASS Card from American Express for Teens

I had a little fun with my mother last week.  I asked her to think back to 1994. That would make me 16 years old. I was driving. I was head over heels in love with Brandon Walsh from 90210. I was a sophomore in high school. And I was a lover of Seventeen Magazine.

I asked my mother to name 10 places she remembers me spending money or wanting to spend my money:

1. Express
2. Benetton
3. Newport Creamery
4. Mini-Golf
5. I Can’t Believe It’s Yogurt
6. Movies
7. Limited
8. GAP
9. Contempo Casual
10. Silver Lining Jewelry Store
(I grew up in Rhode Island so a few of these are very RI-based)

But it got me thinking (as a mom)… how amazing would it would have been for my own mother to have had PASS from American Express.  PASS is a prepaid Card for parents to give to their teens. It’s all about teaching financial responsibility – because as you can tell from my own mother remembering where my money went, it wasn’t to places that were too responsible! Many of my purchases were geared around clothing and entertainment. It’s funny, I asked my mom why GAS didn’t make the Top 10 List (I had my own car)… she said, “Because you never filled it! Your dad always did!”

I had so much fun asking my mom, I thought it would be fun to ask some of my blogging friends via email and on Twitter about what their purchases were way back “in the day” as teenagers.

I have to be honest, it was VERY good to see that I wasn’t alone in the clothing, clothing, clothing and clothing department!

But… that being said, it makes you realize… again, now as a mother – how important it is (especially with all the technology at the fingertips of kids today) to teach financial responsibility. And believe me, I’m not saying that purchasing clothing and teenage entertainment is a bad thing, it’s what your teenage years are all about… but, I’m sure my mom and dad would have liked to have known my babysitting money and lifeguard money was going towards GAS and other incidentals (not all the latest fashion trends!).

Imagine how easy it is now with the PASS Card. Your teen has a prepaid reloadable Card from you, it’s not a debit or credit card, and it’s safer than cash. You receive spend alerts. You can set up automatic reloads. Not to mention, your teen is able to track all his/her spending and have access to budgeting tips and tools. PLUS… notoverdraft fees!

All of this is available with the PASS Card.

My friends at SheSpeaks have an incredible offer for anyone who wants to sign up for the Card.  To get an additional $25 on the Card just enter the code SS25 when you sign up <http://bit.ly/eSFt8z>. This offer expires 4.15.2011 so don’t delay!
