Heart of Haiti at Macy’s

Exactly one year ago today, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck and ravaged Haiti. It is estimated that 230,000 people died, 300,000 were injured and 1,000,000 lost their homes. As the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, Haiti was ill equipped to deal with a disaster that even the richest nations would have struggled with. Help and humanitarian assistance poured in from all over the world, yet Haiti continues to struggle with hundreds of thousands still living in deplorable conditions and fighting a terrible outbreak of Cholera.

For the future of Haiti, financial aid is simply not enough.

Macy’s is extending it’s successful model of “trade not aid” to connect local Haitian artisans with US consumers. This model works on the simple concept that by providing a marketplace for local Haitian artisans, they will help bring the economic stability needed to provide education, healthcare and the most basic need that we often take for granted. It is not a project, but rather a long-term partnership.

Macy’s “Heart of Haiti” collection is a beautiful assortment of quilts, metalwork, ceramics, wood-carvings, paintings and jewelry to name a few. It is centered around beautiful, handmade artisan crafts that will provide a source of income to the artisans, and help them build skills to truly make a difference in their communities.

In addition to adding a beautiful piece of unique art into your home, you can also feel good knowing that the piece or pieces you selected have helped these artisans to preserve their culture, restore their homes and rebuild their communities. How many other things in your home can you say that about?
