Beauty Advice from my Grandmother

My mother’s mother, my Grandma, is a true beauty-nista and fashion-ista. I remember going to my grandmother’s house as a child and just watching in amazement as she got ready for her day. She had a system to her beauty and fashion “madness.” It would take her over an hour to get prepped and completely ready to head out. As a child, it never bothered me, I actually loved it. I loved seeing this woman, my mother’s mother, primping and becoming beautified.

A tiny 4′ 7″ tall, my grandmother has always been into taking care of her body. At 85 years old, she’s still working out, even today! She exercises at her local Senior Center and she walks a mile each day. She always used to tell me, “Beauty starts with the condition your body’s in. You need to feel beautiful inside and out.” I have always taken those words to heart. I have watched my grandmother take care of herself for 32 years… she’s remarkable. I remember as a child and into my teenage years, she would tell people her age and nobody would believe her. Nobody! She’d have to take out her driver’s license to prove her age.

People her entire life have asked her, “What’s your beauty secret?”

My grandmother has always responded this way, “Moisturizing from head to toe.”

Honestly, that advice has lived with me my whole life. I was that “kid” at the YMCA after swim lessons in elementary school moisturizing my legs, feet and my arms after practice in the locker room. I’m still that same person now. It’s worked so beautifully for my grandmother, so there’s got to be something to it.

As I’ve gotten older, and become a mother to 4 boys… I have grown a deep appreciation for my mother, grandmothers and mother-in-law for passing on to me some essential beauty advice and secrets. It’s not easy to keep yourself beautified all the time when you’re a mother of young kids. Recently I started using Olay’s Total Effects 7-in-1 Advanced Anti-Aging Body Wash. It’s done wonders for my body’s skin – improving elasticity, relieving dryness, toning, smoothing and deeply moisturizing.

My grandmother isn’t really one to “deviate” from her beauty regimen. She loves her tried-and-true favorites but tries new body washes and creams in her bathroom because she still reads and gets new beauty ideas from Glamour, Ladies Home Journal and Redbook – ’til this day she’ll mail me a beauty article that she thinks I’ll like and can blog about. It’s adorable!

But I got my grandmother last week to try out the Olay Total Effect 7-in-1 Advanced Anti-Again Body Wash. I told her to try it for 7 days and tell me what she thinks. I noticed a difference immediately, so I was hoping my grandmother would, too. I explained to her that she’d be moisturizing her body with the the wash, in addition to improving her skin in 6 other different ways. My grandmother called me Monday night to share her Olay Total Effect 7-in-1 Advanced Anti-Aging Body Wash news.

“How did you like it, Grandma? You still using it?” I asked.

“I gave to it the lady next door,” she answered.

“Oh… you didn’t like it?” I said.

“No, I loved it! You were right, I noticed a difference right away. The ladies in my building are all trying it out!” she exclaimed.

Enough said.

Sister, Grandmother, Me and My Mother

When I went to her senior complex Tuesday afternoon with a new bottle for her, she had me meet 3 friends who she had try it, too. Everyone was raving about it. My grandmother was too cute… all her life she’s been obsessed with beauty products. She’s also a devout Olay fan. The Olay Total Effect 7-in-1 Advanced Anti-Aging Body Wash really made a difference on her skin. She will always be “the” beauty guru to me, but it was nice for a change to recommend a product I love and see it “transform” her, too.
