Fashion DON'T: Mixing Prints (For Real)

A Fashion Don’t.

Actually… a blazing FASHION DON’T!

There are some women I see… and honestly scratch my head wondering what they were thinking as they dressed that morning.

I saw one of “these” on the train yesterday. And… I couldn’t help but capturing a photo (yes… I chopped off her head.)

This woman… had a mix of 3 (yes… not just 2… but 3) prints. Her scarf was checkered. Her blouse was floral. And pants were leopard. I don’t know what she was trying to do with the mixing… but, oh my – NEVER MIX PRINTS!

I’m no fashionista, but I think her problem goes way beyond mixing prints. Neither the shirt nor the pants seem appropriate for every day wear.

Oh man…I’m glad you snapped a picture!

Now wait, let me go change out of my zebra pants, polka dot shirt, rainbow scarf, and heart headband. -Christine

Wow. Audrey, you’ll love this one. My 7 year old daughter came into my bathroom the other day with a striped dress and polka dot tights on.

I said carefully, “Honey, I love your sense of style and adventure, but people don’t normally wear stripes and polka dots together. Why don’t you change one to a solid color?”

She left the room, came back in with her “party style reference book” that my mom had given her, and said, “Mom, it says here that you should ‘experiment with colors and patterns’. I’m wearing this to school today. I like it.”

God Bless her! How could I argue with that!? If you ever need a guest columnist, let me know. She’s been begging me for her own blog… LOL

I can forgive a scarf not matching an outfit because most of the time, at least here in Minnesota, the scarf is meant to be worn with a coat, not as part of an outfit.

    In this case, OUCH!

    Oh my… that’s a little sad actually.

My husband (who has great fashion sense) and I always debate the pattern issue. Stacy and Clinton say you can mix patterns within the same color scheme (and Clinton does it all the time and looks amazing) but I’m afraid if I tried that, I’d end up looking like this woman.

So I agree that the don’t mix patterns rule is the safe bet!
