Chasing Rainbows

I have these small Swarovski crystal ornaments… 4 of them, that I keep out all year long. The crystals dangle from silky dark blue ribbons that I hang on a small ornament tree and keep in my living room, which faces south. At a certain time of day, depending upon the season, but always during late morning, the sun catches these crystals.

That’s when the magic happens.

In an instant, the sun’s radiance crawls inside these crystals and sends out rainbows of colors. Dozens of tiny little rainbows dance along the walls, the rug, the doors, the fireplace… and if there are children in the room, they chase the tiny rainbows. The beauty of it all is that these rainbows are both silent and fleeting, but always with the promise of returning the next sunny day.

Yesterday, 2-year old Benjamin and 1-year old Henry were the lucky recipients of the crystal magic. The sun was in the most perfect position to scatter the most perfect rainbows and the boys danced with delight as they chased the colorful little shapes around the room. As the sun swept past the two windows, the rainbows changed positions and colors… having just as much fun as the two little boys who chased them.

Now, I know that capturing a rainbow is just as ambitious as capturing a nymph or a fairy or a leprechaun… but I always try. And I know that chasing rainbows is very hard work for little boys. But sometimes… just sometimes… the magic obliges. But it wasn’t until the dancing and leaping and laughing and chasing and giggling had stopped that one kaleidoscoped prism decided to pause along with one little boy.

And the rainbow graced Benjamin’s beautiful little face for one more fleeting moment.

A magical moment captured…
