Talk about ANOTHER BOY from New York City

Ah.  It was a day just like today.

I awoke in New York City.  Just like today.  It was warm and windy with a touch of coolness, but gradually got warmer and warmer as the day progressed.  Just like today.

The difference is that 4 years ago we waited for Alexander Dimitri to arrive all day long.  And this is how Alex’s birthday came to be…

I drove into the city on Tuesday, September 27th, to keep Audrey company for a couple of days.  She had William, who had just turned one on September 25th, and she was close to her due date (October 8th) with Alexander.  It was a glorious day.  I noticed how restless Audrey was… and I even anticipated an early arrival perhaps?!… so we packed a bag of essentials for William, put him in his stroller and headed out for a walk.  Audrey thought a nice long walk through Central Park might get her engine going, so to speak!

Well, almost everyone else had the same idea, too.  The doormen commented on her “status” as we headed out the door, saying things like, “That baby’ll be here any time.”  And a couple of people at the Columbus Circle fountain had the same kind of prediction.  Even the guy we bought ice cream from passed along his birthing wisdom.  And we walked and walked and walked.  And walked.

Late in the afternoon, on our way back to Audrey and Matt’s apartment, Audrey felt a twinge of something. She excitedly called her obstetrician and went in for a quick check.  Yep.  Alexander was coming.  But not that day.  Her OB told her to go home, get a nice rest… and to come to the hospital the next morning.  His prediction was that she would have the baby by early afternoon.  I called Barry, and he and Janie made plans to come to the city in the morning to help me with William.

Wednesday, September 28th was a perfect day.  Audrey and Matt headed out early… and I played with William until Barry and Janie arrived.  I knew we needed to be at the hospital before noon… you know, because Alexander would be arriving…

We piled into a cab with all of William’s things, including his toys and diaper bag and food/bottles and stroller.  Remember… he had just turned ONE three days earlier!  But we knew that this would be a quick day.  Hosptial.  See Mommy and Daddy and baby Alexander.  Back home.

Not so fast.

We waited.  We visited Mommy and Daddy often.  Audrey was incredibly comfortable and happy.  We took long walks.  We ate lunch.  We played in the waiting room where we had waited one year before for William.  We ate dinner.  We played some more.  Dusk settled in.  Darkness settled in.  We waited.  William fell asleep in his stroller.

At around 10:00 pm, Matt called my cell phone and asked me to come see Audrey again.  I panicked a teensy bit… and headed into Audrey’s room.  Barry and Janie waited with William for any news.  The news was that Audrey wanted me to be there for Alexander’s birth, and he was ready to come.  I felt the most honor and love and awe as I took my place next to the OB and watched Audrey push and push and push… push the miracle of Alexander into my life and into my heart right before my eyes.  I watched as his head and his body, still attached to my own child, came into our universe.  I have never, ever felt such expansive joy in all my life.  I will never, ever forget those minutes and those moments of Alexander and Audrey.

The nurse placed Alex on Audrey’s heart… and then he was wrapped.  Then I held him.  I held my Alex right to my own heart and I felt his breathing and his soft little coos.  The world was perfect on that September 28th evening.  10:14 pm.

And Alexander has made our world perfect ever since.  He is the most enthusiastic, most funny, most brilliant, most entertaining, most kind little boy.  Well… not so little.  He turns 4 today.  And I thank God each day for the miracle of him.

I LOVE YOU ALEX… I LOVE EVERY SINGLE MOMENT OF YOU.  HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY MY DARLING, PRECIOUS GRANDSON.  EVERY MOMENT OF YOU IS LOVE AND JOY!!!!
