A Disney character named Couto

My last name is Couto.

It hasn’t always been Couto.  I was once a nice Polish girl with a v-e-r-y long last name.  Actually, I was a nice Irish/Polish/Yugoslavian/Czechoslavakian girl with a v-e-r-y long last name.

I’ve been Sharon K. Couto for much longer than I was that other girl.  But I’ve never been a Disney character.  Until yesterday.

I have been helping my son-in-law with the 4 boys while Audrey is in NYC at Fashion Week.  One of my aces-in-the-hole with these guys, especially the older 3, is puzzles.  (Well, all 4 of them love puzzles.  It’s just that 1-year old Henry loves to throw the pieces, to the complete chagrin of his brothers!)  Yesterday afternoon, I had William and Alex at my home and they were very excited about doing puzzles.  I had a couple on hand that I had picked up at our local discount store… among others, ones with Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Minnie Mouse and Couto.

Yes, you read it right.

As we were sorting the pieces, 3-year old Alex said, “I’m looking for the pieces of Couto.”

“Umm,” I answered, “I think you mean Pluto.”

“It’s Couto,” Alex responded, never looking up from the table.

I hesitated, but then said, “I really think his name is Pluto, honey.”

Alex stopped his sorting and looked at me directly.  “Grandma,” he said, “I met Couto in Disney World.  Didn’t you see the pictures?”

He was so sure.  So correct.  So emphatic.

So I said, “Well… then let’s find the rest of Couto.”

And I kinda liked the sound of it!

Who needs plain old Pluto when you have, or are, a Disney character of your own?

By the way, I’m very fond of that old long Polish name.

And the family that comes with it too.

…but Mom got her licks in by naming you Sharon.

That you can make a lovely and charming story out of simple everyday events is such a gift and a joy to those who love you.

    That includes me.

Oh Sharon, this is so cute. I will never look at Pluto in the same way again. I agree with Connie’s comment, that you can take a simple event and captivate your audience.
I am not saying this because you are a best bloggy buddy, but, I never really liked to read, because I have a hard time comprehending what I read, but your posts have my attention from the start. I have found a new love for reading thru blogging. It means so much to me when you compliment my writings, because I try to be positive and write from the heart. This sounds sappy, but I had to say it….Thanks again for the encouragement.

Oh, kids! How wonderful and funny. And what an honor to be a Disney character. I’d like to be one!

I’m guessing that you still are a nice Polish girl, just like me. I also had a nice long Polish name. Your Alex is a hoot. How fun to be your own Disney charcter!

I love hearing little kids’ take on life! That is one of my favorite things about my life as a Pre-K teacher. This year I already have a whole page of funny things my students have said.
