Lead with a smile…

This may be simplistic… maybe even a bit naive… but have you ever made a decision to lead an entire day with a smile?  I did this yesterday.

And what a good day it was.  Even the grumpiest people are disarmed by a smile.  It’s kind of like, “Oh, I guess I should smile back…”  Suddenly, even the eyes are twinkling a little.  And perhaps any pain of that day is lessened just a tiny bit.

So go confidently through this day with a smile.  Maybe even a great big grin.  You never know whose soul you will touch…

And let me know if you do, and share your smile stories!

What a great idea. I’m off to grocery shop. I’ll let you know how it goes.

    So true!

I recently took on a part-time job as a barista at Starbucks. One of my favorite job duties there is to work the drive-thru, where I get to see many of my neighbors, and meet lots of new people as they make a quick pit-stop for their morning pick-me-up before starting their day. In many cases, I get to be the first person they see or speak to in the morning. Some customers are all smiley & perky at 5am, some customers drive up looking like they literally just rolled over in bed and wound up in the drive-thru lane, and still others look like they’re already having a really bad day. I can’t tell you how good it feels that just by offering them a heartfelt smile and some warm welcoming words — I can see by the look on their faces that I have had an impact on their day — in a really good way.

You’re right – it changes the whole tone of your day. And this is one of the things I love most about living “way out” about 75 miles west of NYC. People smile at each other here. The closer you get to the city, the less that happens.

Great reminder! It’s one of those things where even if you don’t feel like smiling, as soon as you do, you start to believe it. And people certainly are disarmed by a smile. 🙂
