If I could change anything…

Today, while in line at a little luncheon deli, I overheard four women talking and laughing over this question:

If I could change anything

It was obvious that the women weren’t all that into just one “change.” Some of the changes included finances. Some involved men. Jobs. Sports. Talents. Geographic location. Choice of college. And the more they shared, the more changes seemed to reveal themselves. Philosophically speaking, this question is very intriguing.

So… how about your answer!?

If I could change one thing I would go back and NOT go to law school, and stay a teacher. If it weren’t for my student loans, I could be a stay at home mom–at least for awhile. Teaching was much more rewarding, and not such a constant struggle to fight for fairness (as it is in the Old Boys Club of the Pittsburgh legal profession)

That’s such a tough question. I think the one thing I would change was working more before we had kids and not just spending. I only worked per diem (usually 8-12 hours a week) in the year and a half between when I graduated college and had Einey. We didn’t need the money. And I didn’t work at all while I was in school. Then, it really didn’t matter – we had more then enough money to spend, save, travel and live on. I never expected to be a stay at home mom, and we never really thought of saving as much money as we could. But despite those, we’ve still be pretty lucky, but sometimes, I think it would have been easier if we had that extra saved.

But besides that, I love our crazy life and wouldn’t want to change anything else!

The first thing that popped into my head is, I would have gotten my teaching degree to become a Second Grade Teacher. I do believe this was my calling. I had the pleasure of working in a Second Grade classroom when my children were in elementary school as an assistant and also tutored some children after school in the library. I felt so good and felt like I made a difference. I found such joy in walking around the classroom helping students with their cursive writing and making out their stories they would write…I could go on and on. The teacher I assisted had MS and was not able to physically do a lot in the classroom, so I was her hands and legs a lot of the time. I really miss those days, even though I am in a job that I feel God placed me in now. I would just encourage anyone who has a desire to teach, do it! Don’t put it off, follow your dream. I really wouldn’t change anything else because I have a beautiful family and no regrets.

If I could change anything, I would be a SAHM. It’s not something that’s in my power to change, and don’t get me wrong… I appreciate having a job, period, especially one that allows me summers off. But I still wish that I had the choice between working and staying at home, or even better, a job where I could work from home!

If I could change anything, I would have made the conscious effort to live/work in France before I had my daughter Audrey. It is my dream to do that, and I just always assumed I had lots of time, but now I realize how difficult a move like that would be on my family. 🙂 HOWEVER, I wouldn’t trade my life and family now for anything in the world. It’s more of a hindsight thing, really.

    Great question.

    What about you? 🙂

Right now the only thing I would change would be for Tom to be cancer free.

At this exact moment with painter’s tape covering the door frame to keep the cold wind from howling in, and 3/4 inch of ice covering everything, with snow on top of that…I would say my location!!!

You already know this, but I would forgo the weekend in New Hampshire and go to a funeral in August, 1975. It’s the only significant choice I ever made that I regretted.
