My go-to smile guide

There are times when all of us get down. Or as my Nana would have said, “blue.”

Things that always bring a smile to my face, though? Thanks for asking! I’ll share them with you…

1) Dlisted. Usually if I’m on my laptop with tears streaming down my face, I’m reading this Dlisted – and laughing hysterically. It’s a celebrity gossip blog, but it’s funnier, wittier and less out-and-out mean than Perez Hilton. (Plus, Perez’s overboard self-promotion started getting to me like 2 years ago, and now it’s just out of control.) Dlisted’s author, MichaelK, is my one-way best friend. Meaning, I basically can’t live without him but he has no clue who I am.

2) This video of my nephew, Alexander. I took this in January and now I can’t believe how little he looks in the video, and how different his voice sounds now. I just get a kick out of it every time I watch it.

3) Sunflowers. Since last year when we lost our beloved dog Bismarck, everytime I see sunflowers (real ones, photos, paintings, etc.), it’s like Bismarck is there, telling me he’s with me. I have seen them in the most unexpected places and at the most unexpected moments. And I know I am always surrounded by Bizzy’s unending love.

4) Watching my dogs do just about anything… play, sleep (and have dreams), beg for food, chase each other, ride in the car. Also, I just about float on air when people compliment my babies… like what happened the other day. A person in the car next to me at a stop light went nuts trying to get my attention, then mouthed to me through the car window, “They’re beautiful!”

What about you? What your go-to smile guide?

Everybody needs something that will always make them smile. For me, a big squeeze from my kids will always brings a smile to my face. I love that video of little Alexander, when that song used to play endlessly, my little boy would sing with it in the same part. Too cute!!

My go-to smile guide? The sounds of loved ones at my side door… the footsteps, the rattling keys, the doorknob… then the sounds of “Hi Grandma” or Hi Mom” or “Hi Honey” or “Hi Sharon” or the little pitter-patter of piggies and paws.

That’s all I need for a great big smile!

    Wonderful post, Jane!
    For me, it’s
    1. Watching my doggy Chance play or sleep. He just seems to make everything better.
    2. Listening to my Hubby tell me a goofy joke to try to cheer me up!
    3. Seeing my little nephew and listening to him babble. He’s too cute!
    4. Going for a walk in the woods and just taking everything in. It’s so peaceful there!
    5. Re-reading some encouraging e-mails from you, your sis and your mom! That always makes me smile! XO

    1. Looking out on a body of water, be it the ocean or a Lake or pond.

    2. Taking photos of my family

    3. Reading you guys, reading other friends’ blogs, shooting the you know what on Twitter (i.e. NOT talking politics!)

    4. Watching my boys play when they think no one is looking

    5. Listening to my baby giggle and talk in his sleep
