Friday night — 4 and under style.

Friday nights. Work is done for the week. It’s relaxing time with the kiddies without thinking of any deadlines for the next day. Oh… I love Friday nights!

We have had to get a little creative since the addition of Henry to the family. It’s not as easy going out and about with a 3 year old, 2 year old, 17 month old and 12 week old. Especially when it’s dark by 7pm. And especially when the weather is not cooperating. Last night it was rain, rain and more rain.

The boys wanted to go to our local YMCA and play on the playground and run along the hiking path. Unfortunately the rain prohibited us from doing either.

Then they wanted to go bowling. We drove by the Bowling Alley near us – Rock and Bowl was going on and it was absolutely packed solid. And (truth be told) we knew we would be chasing Benjamin around the alley. Heavy bowling balls and 17 month old boys do not mix.

So what did we do with these 2 boys who were anxious to get out and get moving? We brought it inside. All of the fun they wanted to do. Our night started at 6:00 and lasted till 9:30. Seeing their faces – the smiles, the laughter, the excitement.

One thing I’ve learned, it’s important to take the older guys and make their night special, special, special. We have given them the greatest gifts — love and siblings, but it’s times like this when I know the most important gift they need is time with Mommy and Daddy. You know, when the little ones are fast asleep. They had the time of their life!

We bowled!

We made our own “hiking paths” throughout the kitchen, dining room and living room.

We raced. Oh, yes. We raced!

We built forts and read books under them with flashlights.

It was a wonderful night.

You are awesome parents! We didn’t do nearly enough of that type of fun stuff when the girls were little, and now we need to figure out how to do it with tweens and a teen. Mostly that means Friday nights we all pile onto our bed and eat popcorn while we watch Monk and Psych. We all have the same goofy sense of humor, so there is a lot of laughter (an explaining of the 80’s references:-) Today is gray and yucky here, so it’ll be watching movies and folding laundry together. I have to sneak the weekend work in somewhere.

That reminds me of the year Einey was 2 – we were supposed to take the Polar Express at Essex and it snowed like a banshee. We drove part of the way there and decided it was too dangerous to continue. So we came home, made hot chocolate and made our own trains out of cardboard boxes. We decorated them and drove them around the house. It was so much fun!

Aw, how fun! Sounds so sweet and yes, we definitely need to remember that the older ones need our time too. I notice this when I’ll take just one of them with me to Target or something, they act like they won the lottery! 🙂
