Luke O’Connor Hair Stylist

Back when I was living in New York City and working in the Fashion District, the “Before Children Audrey” would leisurely get her hair blown out at salons. She had time to spare to play around with different hairstyles before work. She took the time to smell different products to make sure she would like the scent of her hair. She didn’t really question spending more money on hair products because, well, what else was there to spend money on!?  But this Audrey… with 4 kids and a husband to tend to, a mortgage to pay, a minivan to fill up with gas each week (wait – NYC Audrey? In a minivan? When did this happen!?)… well, my hair care has gone down a bit in my list of priorities, but I still do want it to look stylish, be healthy and yes, (still important!) smell good. However, taking care of it has to fit in with my taking-care-of-4-boys routine – and it must be affordable. (Gas isn’t cheap, have you heard?) In this life? I never dream of meeting Luke O’Connor Hair Stylist

Luke O’Connor Hair Stylist INTERVIEW

So, I chatted with Luke O’Connor Hair Stylist, owner of the exclusive LuKaRo Salon in Beverly Hills, and a consultant/spokesperson for Suave, about how busy moms like me can keep up with the trends while saving money and time – including some great tips for staying stylish this Fall.

Questions for Luke O’Connor Hair Stylist

Audrey: Moms don’t have a lot of time to spend on themselves, especially their hair regimen. Do you have any time-saver tips for busy moms who still want their hair to look good?

Luke O’Connor: My favorite time saving products are: gel, mousse, shine spray, and hairspray. Suave Professionals Extra Hold Gel is great for short hairstyles and detailing because it gives maximum hold and control without a greasy look. Mousse is good to prep the hair for more body and volume. I like it on all hair types, but it’s especially good on fine hair. Mousse gives the hair guts! Suave Professionals Vibrant Shine Mist is a must to give a hairstyle beautiful luster and a healthy look. It enhances any style to add a little glam factor. Hairspray is probably the product no one should be without. I use it for both styling and finishing. A great tip for using hairspray is: when you’re spraying to finish with volume, hold the can 8-10 inches from the head. You want a fine light mist that won’t weigh the hairstyle down, and provide hold. You can also use hairspray to detail areas of the style. For this you hold the can closer, 2-4 inches from the head. This is good for the hairline to open the style up around the face or to piece it out.

Audrey: Everyone is trying to save money these days, and cutting back on “frivolous” things. What do you consider to be the necessities when it comes to hair products?

Luke: Select products that are going to keep your hair strong and healthy. Healthy hair means fewer trims over the course of a year (which translates into extra savings). Look for products that use silicone technology, such as Suave Professionals Vibrant Shine Mist, to apply to the ends of hair to prevent breakage and extend the life of your haircut in between appointments. Also, don’t be shy about asking your stylist to give you a quick training session on the styling techniques they use. Knowing how to achieve salon style at home will save you money spent on blowouts and updos for special events.

Audrey: How do you suggest women take care of their hair when they’re in the sun so much this summer, and at the pool/beach?

Luke: Choose products that fight the elements, such as waterproof gels and UV protectors, to keep hair healthy. Try Suave Professionals Color Care Shampoo and Conditioner. It has UV protection and helps hair hold on to color.

Audrey: The reality is, Fall is just around the corner. What are some of the hairstyles we’ll see this season on celebrities?

Luke: This Fall, celebs will be showing off their hair’s natural texture to achieve the season’s soft, feminine looks.

How to Achieve: Instead of blow-drying hair completely, dry strands for just a few minutes using a low setting. Next, flip your head upside down and lightly mist hair with Suave Professionals Extra Hold Hairspray (holding 8-10 inches away from the head). The combination of a quick blow-dry and mist of hairspray will show off your hair’s natural texture, provide volume and give tresses that “piece-y” look.

Celebs will also be sporting messy buns, loose braids and last-minute-looking ponytails – these unkempt ‘do’s are all the rage this season!

How to Achieve: For the perfect messy bun, lightly brush hair back into a low ponytail and secure with a hair elastic. Loosely twist hair into a messy bun and pin in place with bobby pins. Don’t worry if pieces of hair pop out of the bun – you don’t want the look to appear too “tried.” To glam up your bedhead-inspired ‘do, make locks lustrous by giving your hair a quick spritz of Suave Professionals Vibrant Shine Mist.

Thanks, Luke!

I’ve got the fall style covered then. I had to run to my favorite (I am so kidding here) store this morning: walmart. How far I have fallen from the days when I would not even think of leaving my house unshowered and perfectly groomed. Today it was throw on some short and a tshirt, put the hair up in a “messy” looking pony tail and call myself ready to go. How liberating! Took me 5 minutes. Nobody cared what I looked like, and I even saw a lady in hair rollers!
