A night with Savvy Auntie

So night before last I’m sitting at the busy bar of a hot, hip club in New York City talking to a cute, well-dressed, direct-eye-contact sort of guy who was born in 1976 and has developed a love of vodka martinis, straight up with 2 olives, along with a curious interest in the manners and etiquette of men born specifically between 1932 and 1950, and women who were hippies in the late 60’s and early 70’s… and who offered to buy me a drink and asked what had brought me to that club.

OK.

No, I’m not a “cougar.” I was not in “the city” to resurrect scenes from Sex and the City. I do know a man who was born between 1932 and 1950. My husband. I wasn’t (technically) a hippie. And no, I bought my own drink. Or more specifically, my daughter Jane bought me a drink.

And my answer to why I was in the city? “To celebrate the launch of Savvy Auntie,” I said.

He thought for just a moment. “Is that an Italian product?” he asked politely.

Silence. Me thinking. Thinking. Then I got it.

“No,” I smiled my non-cougar, non free-love, married to an old-guy smile, “It’s not Saviante. It’s Savvy Auntie. A website for, well… savvy aunties.”

He was cute. “Saviante. It sounds like a wine,” he said.

“No. No,” I smiled. “It’s a new, fabulous website. Savvy Auntie. Like ‘cool and practical and understanding and hip’ attached to ‘auntie,’ as in your mother’s sister.”

“Oh! That’s cool,” he said. “Like a website for moms, but for aunts.”

“And godmothers, and great aunts… for all women who love kids. And uncles, too!” I added.

He got it. He loved it. He’s an uncle. He knows lots of aunties. And we had a few laughs over the “Italian” Savvy Auntie… Saviante!

By then the guests were flowing into the club for the Savvy Auntie launch party, and what a fabulous time it was. Melanie Notkin, founder of Savvy Auntie, not only knows how to bring the most comprehensive, fun and inspiring resource and community to “aunties” everywhere… she knows how to throw a party! I salute and celebrate Melanie and the launch of SavvyAuntie.com with my new and favorite buzz word… Saviante!

And oh… on our drive back to Rhode Island that evening, Jane scolded reminded me about giving out too much information to cute guys at bars with pick-up lines.

Oh, Jane. You are savvy!

Sounds like so much fun! And I am so Southern. Have I been prouncing it wrong? I’ve been saying it “saavy” (like “a”ttitude), “auntie” (like the insect “ant.”) Saviante sounds much more classy, lol.
