A child’s idea of a hospital…

My mother-in-law is 89 years old. She has had a few medical problems lately, but she is one strong, vibrant, funny and very feisty lady.

But last week, she had to be admitted to our local hospital due to unexplained chest pains. Four days later, on Friday, she had a pacemaker inserted.

Her recovery from this procedure has been slow, so my husband and I have been spending lots of time visiting her, helping and encouraging her to eat… and talking to her though the way-too-lingering-effects of anesthesia.

During this time, I have also been spending lots of time with Audrey and her boys, too, helping while Audrey recovers from her C-section. We try to be careful about talking about Nana-Flo’s condition in front of the kids so as not to scare them… but this morning was a bit different.

My conversation with William went something like this:

“Grandma, why can’t you stay here and play with us?”

“I have some things to do, Honey. But I will be back soon.”

“What do you have to do? Can I come?”

Me thinking fast: “Well, I have to go to the Post Office. The bank. The gas station…”

“OK. I will get my shoes.”

“Well, Honey. I have to go to the hospital, too.”

William, shocked: “WHY? ARE YOU HAVING A BABY!?”

Me laughing: “No, I am going to visit Nana-Flo because…”

William interrupting: “BECAUSE NANA-FLO IS HAVING A BABY!?”

Ah… if life was only this simple and beautiful!

Of course he would expect that! Still, very cute.

I was surprised at how well Princess did visiting my mom in the hospital a few weeks ago. She understood that her grandma was there so the doctors could make her better and heal her boo-boos. We took her for walks when some of the ickier stuff happened (dressing changes) but she stayed put for everything else. Now she want to check Grandma’s blood, give her pain shots and nurse her every night after school.

Isn’t it funny the things that seem to traumatize them/stick in their minds? That’s a precious story :o)

How precious is he? I love the mind of a child. His only concept of hospitals is to have a baby – let that stay that way as long as possible.

How sweet. It’s wonderful that his biggest experience with a hospital is a joyful thing!
Praying that Nana-Flo has a quick recovery.
